About

Artistic Staff Accomplishments: In addition to successful ballet exams and performances, several students participated and placed in ballet competitions. In the Washington Grand Prix, Alison Kim and Zoe Loo took first place in their divisions; Kazumi Nunomura and Katherine Neigh were in the top 10 of their divisions; and Ximena Legorreta took 3rd place in the Contemporary Junior Category and placed in the top 10 in the Classical Junior Category. Pre-professional student Jean Pires also won prizes for his choreography in the contemporary category. Students also performed at several external events, including at the World Bank, local schools, and at the Kennedy Center with the Mariinsky Ballet. The ballet teaching staff also welcomed a new and prestigious member to their ranks; Runqiao Du, who danced for 18 years with the Washington Ballet and has strong connections for recruitment in Shanghai and Beijing. Academic Accomplishments: The Academic and Admissions departments have expanded their recruitment for students joining the academic-only program; greater efforts are being made towards DC outreach. This year also saw the establishment of a scholarships committee to meet quarterly to assess students on scholarship; they will be assessed based on their classroom attendance, performance, and behavior to determine the continuation of their scholarship.Academic, Wellness, and Artistic staff are working together to migrate their online database information to a new online database, Gradelink, which will consolidate all information from the various and disparate software being used previously. Residence Life and Facilities:The Kirov Academy building has begun and has planned further renovations, as the building is quite old and has been left unchanged for quite some time. The Academy is also working with DC's Project for Empowerment to employ DC residents living in areas with high levels of unemployment and/or poverty. This is beneficial both as a public relations move for the Academy, and because the DC government will help subsidize the salaries of anyone hired through this initiative. Administration: Among the many administrative changes of 2018 was the increase of benefits provided to staff, including full medical insurance and free meals in the cafeteria. Several changes were made in the Financial Department to increase transparency, with the implementation of a new series of checks and balances, including dual control over critical financial transactions, wire transfers, and payments, all of which must pass Mme. Moon's approval.Efforts to fundraise more effectively from external sources included a partnership with Merrill Lynch, who sponsored the two winter performances.
