About
Department of Motor Vehicles Grant/SAFE Roadways in Chesterfield County: SAFE received a grant in 2018 from Virginia Highway Safety Office through the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to implement a mass and social media campaign to reduce and prevent alcohol and drug-impaired driving related crashes with 18 25 year olds. As in the previous years, SAFE used the translated #HoldTheKeys in Spanish, #TengaLaLlave, for use on Spanish radio, television and social media outlets to target education and awareness towards the Chesterfield County Latino community. SAFE partnered with Chesterfield County Police to gather data and conduct interviews and focus groups with patrol officers, DUI training instructors, Drug Recognition Experts, Commonwealths Attorney and adult Drug Court participants. The final needs assessment report, including findings and recommendations, has been shared with community partners and published on the SAFE website. Using this information, SAFE created the Drug Impaired Driving :30 second video PSA. The #HoldTheKeys and #TengaLaLlave PSA was featured 243 times on radio and 120 times on Spanish radio. The radio campaigns made over 807, 950 gross impressions in Chesterfield County. The #HoldTheKeys and Drug Impaired Driving ad buys continued to reach great numbers of young adults in this grant cycle: across Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and cable, SAFE was able to reach over 154,170 people and make over 1,844,788 impressions. SAFEs social media accounts made 393 posts that were related to drinking and drug-impaired driving prevention messaging. SAFEs social media campaigns made 673,108 impressions across Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. SAFE has received funding from Virginia Highway Safety Office for the 2019 grant cycle to continue airing the Drug Impaired Driving drinking and drug-impaired driving prevention campaign along with other drug-impaired driving outreach strategies in the community. The 2019 Young Adult Survey measures attitudes, perceptions and behaviors related to substance use of 18-25 year olds in Chesterfield County. There were 310 responses this year (211 English, 99 Spanish). 91.35% are concerned with the issue of driving under the influence of alcohol and 89.45% are concerned with the issue of drug-impaired driving (marijuana and opioids) in their community. Other significant YAS results: -In the past 30 days, 91.35% of participants did not drive under the influence of alcohol -In the past 30 days, 89.45% of participants did not drive under the influence of drugs (marijuana or opioids) -59.85% of participants believe there is a great risk when driving after consuming 1-2 alcoholic beverages -93.92% of participants believe there is a great risk when driving after consuming 4-5 alcoholic beverages -71.84% of participants believe there is a great risk when driving after consuming prescription opioids -64.21% of participants believe there is a great risk when driving after using marijuana -18.82% of participants chose to call a cab after drinking or using drugs -33.21% of participants chose to ask a sober friend for a ride home after drinking or using drugs
