Mission

Founded in 1998, Girls Write Now is New York's first and only writing and mentoring organization for girls. Through one-to-one mentoring with professional women writers and media makers, writing and technology workshops, and leadership, college prep, and professional development opportunities, we inspire women to share their craft and empower girls to find their voices and tell their stories. 100% of our senior girls go to college armed with writing and multimedia portfolios and a strong sense of self. Our girls — over 90% high need and 95% girls of color — have performed at Lincoln Center and the United Nations, published original work in Newsweek, The New York Times, Buzzfeed, and our award-winning anthology, and earned hundreds of Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

About

THE NEEDGirls Write Now serves a culturally and educationally diverse community of mentees 90% girls of color, 70% immigrant or first generation, 25% LGBT/non-conforming, and 90% high need. These underserved girls, who have long been negatively impacted by the lack of resources and opportunities in public schools, face significant challenges to educational and professional success. They often lack the guidance and support from a consistent, caring adult, and most come to Girls Write Now with low confidence in their talents and accomplishments. Unfortunately, in our city and our country, girls of color are rarely given the guidance, care, and systemic support they need to graduate from high school and access viable college or career opportunities, perpetuating cycles of poverty and disempowerment. Girls Write Now is uniquely positioned to help correct these longstanding inequalities. MODELA television writer and a high school student unpack laptops at a coffee shop and debate narrative structure. A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist breaks down her technique to an audience of eager young women. A writer finally gets the cadence of her poem just right and her heart beats a little faster with pride. This is Girls Write Now. Girls Write Now pairs underserved young women with professional women writers as lifelong mentors and role models. We also welcome them into a diverse community working closely with them to navigate their professional and personal goals. Through one-to-one mentoring with professional women writers and media makers, multimedia/multi-genre workshops, publication, presentation, and leadership opportunities, college and career preparation, and wellness wraparound services, we inspire women to share their craft and empower girls to find their voices and tell their stories. Operating at the intersection of literature, art, and technology, Girls Write Now serves more than 600 mentees annually through our core programs. We are also a founding member of the STARS Citywide Girls Initiative, collectively reaching more than 5,000 girls in every single district of New York City. As the first writing and mentoring organization for girls, Girls Write Now has been a nationally award-winning leader in arts education for over 20 years, and continues to innovate ways to elevate the voices of girls who are often not heard or worse, silenced. IMPACTGirls Write Now consistently demonstrates that our approach is effective in turning around the high rate of failure often experienced by economically disadvantaged young women of color due to systemic inequality and injustice.100% of our senior girls go to college armed with writing and multimedia portfolios and a strong sense of self more than half with awards and scholarships. Our mentees are published in outlets including The New York Times, Newsweek, and BuzzFeed, and our award-winning anthologies; perform at Lincoln Center and the United Nations; and earn hundreds of Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
