STRATEGIC BROADENING SEMINARS:IDB'S STRATEGIC BROADENING SEMINARS, CREATED ORIGINALLY AT THE REQUEST OF THE U.S. ARMY, ARE A COLLECTION OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO PUSH PARTICIPANTS TO THINK DIFFERENTLY, GAIN EXPOSURE TO NON-U.S. MILITARY PERSPECTIVES, AND BE PREPARED TO OPERATE IN AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE. FIRST DELIVERED IN THE SUMMER OF 2012, THE UNC IDB STRATEGIC STUDIES FELLOWS PROGRAM (SSFP) IS A FOUR-WEEK RESIDENTIAL GRADUATE-LEVEL PROGRAM ON STRATEGIC NATIONAL SECURITY STUDIES FOR JUNIOR U.S. ARMY OFFICERS, SELECTED NON-COMMISSIONED OFFICERS, AND THEIR CIVIL SERVICE COUNTERPARTS. IN 2017, PARTICIPANTS FROM OTHER SERVICES WERE INCLUDED FOR THE FIRST TIME. THE PROGRAM IS ADMINISTERED BY IDB IN COLLABORATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA PARTNERSHIP FOR NATIONAL SECURITY, INDIANA UNIVERSITY, THE TRIANGLE CENTER ON TERRORISM AND HOMELAND SECURITY, AND THE TRIANGLE INSTITUTE FOR SECURITY STUDIES. THE SEVENTH COHORT OF SSFP WAS DELIVERED IN JUNE AND JULY 2018 WITH 33 ARMY, MARINE, AND NAVY PERSONNEL GRADUATING. THE STUDENTS LIVED AND ATE AT CAMPUS FACILITIES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL. CLASSES WERE DELIVERED ON THE UNC CAMPUS AS WELL AS AT NEIGHBORING UNIVERSITIES, AND CORPORATIONS. GRADUATES RECEIVED TWO GRADUATE CREDIT HOURS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL. BUILDING ON THE SUCCESS OF THE FLAGSHIP PROGRAM IN CHAPEL HILL, IDB EXPANDED THE SSFP PROGRAM IN 2016 BY PARTNERING WITH INDIANA UNIVERSITY TO INTRODUCE THE IU-IDB SSFP IN BLOOMINGTON, IN. THIS THREE-WEEK PROGRAM ADDS A CYBER SECURITY FOCUS OPTION TO THE SSFP PORTFOLIO. THE 2018 OFFERING WAS HELD IN MAY/JUNE AND 31 STUDENTS ATTENDED AND GRADUATED FROM THE PROGRAM.THE IDB MEGACITIES STRATEGIC BROADENING SEMINAR (SBS) IS A TWO-WEEK INTENSIVE EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITY FOR U.S. ARMY STUDENTS TO EXPLORE AND UNDERSTAND THE CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE AND URBAN GEOGRAPHY OF CITIES, THE TECHNOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL CONNECTEDNESS OF CITY NETWORKS, AND THE CULTURE AND BEHAVIOR OF PEOPLE AND THEIR ENVIRONMENT IN DENSE URBAN AREAS. THE PILOT MEGACITIES SBS WAS DEVELOPED AND DELIVERED ORIGINALLY IN 2017 BY THE IDB AS PART OF THE U.S. ARMY'S STRATEGIC BROADENING SEMINAR INITIATIVE AND HOSTED AT FORT HAMILTON ARMY BASE IN BROOKLYN, NEW YORK WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE U.S. ARMY GARRISON THERE. IN 2018, THE PROGRAM WAS RENAMED "DEFENSE URBAN STUDIES" SBS, AND TWO COHORTS WERE DELIVERED TOTALING 44 PARTICIPANTS.2018 SAW CONTINUED GROWTH AND DIVERSIFICATION IN IDB'S SBS OFFERINGS. THE ARMY'S SBS OFFICE ASKED IDB FOR TWO PILOT TRAINING WITH INDUSTRY PROGRAMS IN 2018: ONE FOCUSED ON INFORMATION OPERATIONS, AND ANOTHER ON LOGISTICS. THE INDUSTRY BASED BROADENING-INFORMATION OPERATIONS (IB2-IO), AND INDUSTRY BASED BROADENING-LOGISTICS (IB2-LOG) PROGRAMS DEBUTED IN AUGUST AND OCTOBER 2018, RESPECTIVELY WITH A TOTAL OF 51 PARTICIPANTS. THESE PROGRAMS HELP TRANSFER "BEST OF BREED" BUSINESS EXAMPLES INTO THE MILITARY-ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT AS THE ARMY RECENTLY REDUCED OPPORTUNITIES IN ITS TRADITIONAL TRAINING WITH INDUSTRY PROGRAM. BOTH IB2 PILOTS WERE SUCCESSFUL AND FOLLOW-ON PROGRAMS ARE SCHEDULED FOR 2019.
