Mission

The mission of The Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club of Transylvania County is to enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens. We are more than an after school program, we are a youth development organization serving school-aged youth ages 5 to 18 years old. The Cindy Platt Boys & Girls Club is a positive place for kids and impacts the life of every young person it serves. We provide a safe place to go, a home away from home, where children feel welcomed and where they join together in wholesome recreation and companionship.

About

FROM A HUMBLE BEGINNING SERVING LESS THAN FIFTY CHILDREN PER DAY IN 1999, WE HAVE GROWN TO BE THE LARGEST YOUTH DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION IN THE COUNTY, SERVING NEARLY 700 TRANSYLVANIA YOUTH THROUGH OUR AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS IN 2019. WE FOCUS OUR DAILY PROGRAMMING EFFORTS ON THREE DISTINCT AREAS: ACADEMIC SUCCESS, HEALTHY LIFESTYLES, AND GOOD CHARACTER & CITIZENSHIP. THIS HAS HELPED US TO CREATE NEW OPPORTUNITIES AND ENHANCE EXISTING PROGRAMS FOR OUR MEMBERS. AS A RESULT, OUR CLUB HAS SEEN EXCITING ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN A NUMBER OF AREAS. TEEN SERVICES AND ATTENDANCE HAS MAINTAINED A CONTINUAL RISE, DESPITE A DECLINE IN TEEN PARTICIPATION ACROSS MOST CLUBS NATIONALLY. IN ADDITION TO REGULAR ATHLETIC PROGRAMMING, WE NOW HOST ELEVEN LEAGUE SPORTS TEAMS THAT INCLUDE ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS, HELPING WITH THE PLAYERS' HOMEWORK CONSISTENCY AS WELL AS GRADES. OF THE REPORT CARDS COLLECTED FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR 77% IMPROVED THEIR GPA TO A C OR ABOVE AND 96% OF OUR YOUTH AND TEENS FEEL LIKE THEY ARE ON TRACK TO GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL ON TIME. THESE AND FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES TO INVEST IN THE LIVES OF YOUTH, MAKING INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS POSSIBLE THROUGH PERSONALIZED CONNECTIONS, CONTINUE TO BE THE PASSION AND VISION OF OUR CLUB. OUR CLUB'S AFTERSCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES OF AFFORDABLE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS AND ACCESS TO TRANSPORTATION. BY OFFERING OUR PROGRAMS FOR A LOW MEMBERSHIP FEE OF 100 PER CHILD FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR AND 150+ PER CHILD FOR OUR EIGHT-WEEK SUMMER PROGRAM, WE ARE POSITIONED TO SERVE ALL YOUTH REGARDLESS OF THEIR SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS. SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE FOR FAMILIES THAT ARE UNABLE TO PAY THE MEMBERSHIP AND PROGRAM FEES. TO FURTHER SUPPORT OUR CLUB FAMILIES, WE PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION TO THE CLUB FROM EIGHT OF THE TEN SCHOOLS IN THE COUNTY, EXTEND OUR WEEKDAY HOURS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR TO 7PM, AND OFFER EARLY DROP OFF AT 7:30AM DURING OUR SUMMER PROGRAM. WE ALSO PROVIDE SNACK AND DINNER FOR YOUTH DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, AND BREAKFAST AND LUNCH DURING OUR SUMMER PROGRAM. OVER 50 YOUTH HAVE A HOT DINNER WITH US EVERY NIGHT DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR BEFORE THEY GO HOME. AS THE MEMBERSHIP AND OUTCOMES OF OUR CLUB CONTINUE TO GROW, SO TOO DO THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS OF MEMBERS. EACH COMES TO US WITH UNIQUE LIFE STORIES AND CHALLENGES. WE SEE THE CLUB AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ENTER INTO THEIR WORLD AND HELP THEM FIND THEIR OWN PATH TO SUCCESS. TEACHING, MODELING, AND PROMOTING SELF-CARE HAVE BROUGHT ENCOURAGING OUTCOMES THAT GO FAR BEYOND BASIC ACADEMICS, ATHLETICS, AND CHILD CARE. THE CLUB IS, FOR MANY MEMBERS, A SAFE PLACE WHERE CRITICAL NEEDS ARE RECOGNIZED AND ADDRESSED. THIS SCHOOL YEAR OUR PROGRAM DIRECTORS BEGAN TO PURPOSEFULLY COORDINATE ALL OF OUR SCHOOL-YEAR AND SUMMER PROGRAMS SO THAT WE CAN BETTER SUPPORT AND ENHANCE THIS POSITIVE, SAFE ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH MEMBERS CAN LEARN, EXPLORE, AND GROW. AND WE ARE SEEING MEMBERS TAKE A MORE ACTIVE INTEREST IN THEIR PERSONAL ABILITIES AND FUTURES. WHETHER IN THE GARDEN, THE GYM, THE GAME ROOM, OR LEARNING CENTER, WE MEET OUR MEMBERS WHERE THEY ARE AND WATCH THEM ACHIEVE MEANINGFUL GROWTH THROUGH INTENTIONAL PROGRAMMING AND GENUINE RELATIONSHIPS WITH STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, MENTORS, AND OTHER MEMBERS.
