About

Roper St. Francis Healthcare cares for more Lowcountry adults than any other healthcare provider. Our mission is simple: Healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence. Our history spans more than 160 years, and our healthcare system has grown to include three flagship hospitals: Roper Hospital, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital and Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital. We will open a fourth flagship hospital, Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital, in Berkeley County in 2019. Our Roper St. Francis Physician Partners offers a comprehensive network of more than 240 employed physicians and more than 100 advanced care providers covering a complete range of primary care and 25 other subspecialties spread across the Lowcountry. We have more than 800 doctors on our Medical Staff and are the second largest private employer in the Lowcountry with more than 5,500 teammates. As Charleston's only private, not-for-profit healthcare system with a specific focus on community outreach, our entire organization is committed to making a difference. Roper St. Francis contributed $59.9 million in community benefit in 2018, which represents 6.5 percent of our net operating revenue. This community benefit comes in many forms, such as $46.2 million in charity care, $12.2 million in unreimbursed Medicaid costs and $1.4 million in community outreach programs. Our teammates go beyond the walls of their work spaces to support our community's health. Our teammates provided 9,164 hours of time supporting wellness, outreach and education events that touched 17,894 of our neighbors. Roper St. Francis is a leader in the new collaborative called "Healthy TriCounty" along with MUSC, the Trident United Way and over 60 health-related agencies. A new five-year Health Improvement Plan was developed in 2018 to address the health needs and disparities in our community. It's the first health improvement plan developed specifically for Berkeley, Charleston and Dorchester counties. Healthy Tri-County won a $450,000 grant, "Healthy People, Healthy Carolinas," from the Duke Endowment to roll out evidence-based interventions to mitigate chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension that affect our community. The grant will focus on faith communities, workplaces and schools, and the Lowcountry efforts will be part of coalitions across North Carolina and South Carolina that are engaging leaders from diverse organizations to align existing programs and develop ways to help residents get involved in improving their health. The "Farmacy Project" provided over 2,000 bags of fresh produce to families in need, thanks to the Lowcountry Food Bank and the Department of Mental Health working with Roper St. Francis Healthcare. The new Transitions Clinic on Rivers Avenue in North Charleston provided over 5,600 visits for those most in need with 500 new patients seen in 2018. The Access Health Tri-County Network added over 1,300 new patients and our continuum of care expanded with the new Hospice Cottage in Mount Pleasant. Our Roper St. Francis Physician Partners made tremendous achievements in the rates of vaccinations, screenings, controlling blood pressure and providing wellness visits. We also proudly supported more than 70 community organizations including the Barrier Islands Free Clinic, Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach, East Cooper Community Outreach, One 80 Place, The Dream Center and many more health agencies. The Roper St. Francis Opioid Reduction Task Force helped achieve a 35 percent reduction in use and also has organized the successful "Take Back" events throughout our community. Depression screenings and follow-up are now part of our practices and our Research and Innovation Center became a national leader in Alzheimer's research, prevention and treatment. Our Maternal Fetal Medicine program for high-risk pregnancies provided over 12,500 patient visits in 2018. Support for the Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach and Shifa Clinic continues with a special focus in this area of pre-natal care for mothers and babies. Our healthcare system won a $725,000, three-year grant from The Duke Endowment to foster better and earlier conversations about the goals, values and priorities of seriously ill patients with their clinicians. The goals of the grant are to improve the frequency, timing and quality of seriously ill patient communication as well as to develop a model for this process that can be shared across the Carolinas with other healthcare systems.Roper St. Francis Healthcare also won a $525,000, three-year grant from The Duke Endowment to enhance our ability to improve long-term outcomes of high-risk patients who frequently use medical care. The grant mostly benefitted the Transitions Clinic as well as the system's Emergency Department U-Turn program. The grant funds two community health workers to help patients navigate the health system, a certified behavioral health therapist for patients with mental health and substance abuse disorders, and TelePsych consults with Charleston and Dorchester Mental Health. In 2018, we also: - Trained 1,051 community members in hands-only CPR, helping to increase the likelihood of people to perform CPR in an emergency.- Joined forces with the Trident United Way to raise $281,427. We were one of only six hospitals or healthcare systems to be ranked five years or longer. The ranking is based on multiple measures across nine clinical and operational performance benchmarks. Our team demonstrated exceptional patient care during our successful Joint Commission reaccreditation survey, and many of our processes were identified to be best practices. We also continued to rank among the best organizations in the country as an excellent place to work and for our teammate engagement for the last decade. In 2018, we unveiled a new vision for our healthcare system, and it has become our mantra, guiding our major initiatives and capturing our focus areas. The vision, Exceeding Expectations Every Day in Quality, Access and Affordability, was created with teammates, physicians and our board, and it's intended to be inspirational and aspirational, something we hope to achieve in the future. We want to serve patients closer to where they live and work, and we continued to expand our services in Berkeley and Dorchester counties.
