Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital traces its origins back to 1882 when five Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy opened St. Francis Infirmary in downtown Charleston as the first Catholic hospital in the state.Bon Secours St. Francis now is affiliated with the Bon Secours Health System, Inc. and is located on an expansive oak-graced campus west of the Ashley River. Bon Secours St. Francis contributed $14.9 million in community benefit in 2018. This benefit included charity care, unreimbursed Medicaid, numerous sponsorships and community outreach programs (see Schedule H for additional details). Overall, the hospital contributed nearly 4,000 volunteer staff hours for activities such as health fairs, career days and public programs that benefited nearly 3,500 individuals in the community.
