Lighthouse for the Blind's mission is "to maximize independence and provide employment opportunities for persons who are blind or visually impaired."

About

Transition program which assists blind and visually impaired youth to be ready to work, go to college, or attend a technical school upon completion of high school. 57 teens received training in career exploration, technology, independent living and employment skills to prepare for college or work upon graduation from high school. One of these individuals, Tony, shares his story that exemplifies the positive outcome of this program. Tony enrolled in the teen transition program at age 13. His first work experience in transition was at Publix. From that very first work experience, when he was 14, Tony made up his mind that when he graduated from high school he wanted to work at Publix. During the next 7 summers, Tony had a variety of different work experience jobs, but he remained firm on wanting to return to Publix. Upon graduation from high school, Tony was referred to our job placement program. He met with his counselor and his placement specialist and they discussed with him about going to college or a technical school but Tony remained firm on working at Publix. His dream was fulfilled in September of last year when he found employment at a Publix near his home. During his participation in the transition program Tony participated in many areas to build his skills such as his technology skills, his independent living skills, self-confidence and his braille skills. Tony learned to prepare meals for himself. With the help of his teachers he learned how to advocate for himself. Despite additional disabilities, Tony trained and has participated in stair climbing competitions with our teens. The first time he competed using his cane and made it to the top of a 42 story building he said, "I can't believe all these people are cheering for me." He loves to compete and stay busy as much as he loves Publix. Tony has developed into a hard working young man.
