About

Athletic & Sports Programs: The Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program (JSMP) is a volunteer-based organization that is dedicated to the prevention, awareness and advocacy of youth sports related injuries. JSMP strives to assist athletes and coaches through the delivery of free sports medicine health care services by physicians, licensed athletic trainers and other members of the sports medicine team who (1) promote injury prevention strategies through education, pre-participation screening and injury tracking, (2) provide injury recognition, assessment and treatment through supervision of sporting events, (3) facilitate emergency treatment in collaboration with emergency medical professionals in regard to sports-specific accidents, and (4) provide continuing education programming. During 2018, the program provided computer-based concussion baseline assessments for more than 500 athletes and these were performed at 8 schools in the Jacksonville community free of charge. In 2018, 520 athletic screenings were performed free of charge for student-athletes regardless of their ability to pay. Due to the complexity and content of these exams, they are valued at $200 per student for a grand total of $104,000 benefit to the community. Physician members of JSMP volunteered 375 hours of service (99 games per regular season and 18 post season events) as team physicians for community schools. Certified Athletic Trainers (ATC's) volunteered 100 hours of service (132 games per regular season) as athletic trainers for community schools. Using a conservative volunteer hour value in Florida of $25.00/hr., the estimated cash value of the volunteer hours provided exceeded $11,875. In 2018, Educational programming consisted of 4 Project 17 Lunch & Learns, our 9th Annual Symposium, Annual Emergency Preparations course, FASMed Collaborative Solutions and three additional courses. The total attendance for these events was approximately 235, resulting in the delivery of 2,000 hours of continuing medical education CME, BOC Category A CEU & BOC EBP CEU at a significantly reduced cost with a total value of more than $70,000. In 2018, JSMP trained 253 coaches in sports injury safety programs, at reduced cost, with a value of more than $10,120. Some of the various program service accomplishments during 2018 included the following: (1)Participated in DCPS Parent Academy for education on Heat Illness and Concussion in sports (2) Hosted Collaborative Solutions for Safety in Florida High School Sports Meeting (3) Engaged a system of care for sports related concussions, (4) participated within organizations with similar missions, (5) provided seasonal coaches education programs, (6) planned and hosted the annual JSMP Annual Symposium, (7) provided athletic training services to select events, (8) refined annual athletic screening program (9) hosted the annual First Coast Sports Injury Symposium and (10) added our fourth cohort to the Project 17 certified athletic trainer initiative.
