Mission

IFA IS COMMITTED TO ENSURING THE WELL-BEING OF WOMEN & CHILDREN IN AFRICA, ESPECIALLY THE VULNERABLE WITH LIMITED ACCESS TO QUALITY HEALTH CARE AND ESSENTIAL SERVICES LIKE NUTRITIOUS FOOD, EDUCATION, & SAFE DRINKING WATER

About

THE PROJECTS ACCOMPLISHED IN 2018, AND PREVIOUS YEARS, MAINLY FOCUSED ON DEVELOPING AND EXPANDING THE SUSTAINABLE SCHOOL HEALTH AND NUTRITION PROGRAM (SSHNP)AMONG 3 PUBLIC, PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ADDIS ABABA & 1 PRIMARY SCHOOL AT JIHUR NORTHERN SHOWA. IFFA SERVES MORE THAN 840 VULNERABLE PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN IN ETHIOPIA. WE PROVIDED NUTRITIOUS MEALS -- BREAKFAST & LUNCH ON 200 SCHOOL DAYS. ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS TO THE SSHNP INCLUDE THE SCHOOL EYE HEALTH & A SCHOOL WASH (WATER SANITATION AND HYGIENE). ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS INCLUDE VOCATIONAL TRAINING FOR YOUTH, ESPECIALLY GIRLS, AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT IN NORTHERN SHEWA. SSHNP - DURING 2018 IFA REACHED 4 SCHOOLS WITH ITS SSHNP PROGRAM. THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE SSHNP IN 2018 ARE: A. PROVISION OF TWO MEALS FOR 609 VULNERABLE STUDENTS ON 200 SCHOOL DAYS; PROVIDED FOR NEEDS AT HANA PRIMARY SCHOOL; ADMINISTERED DEWORMING MEDICATION BIANNUALLY TO MORE THAN 600 STUDENTS. DELIVERED CAPACITY BUILDING HEALTH EDUCATION TRAINING FOR MORE THAN 600 STUDENTS, 10 COOKS, 234 PARENTS, AND 32 MEMBERS OF THE SHN COMMITTEE ON NUTRITION, HYGIENE AND SANITATION. B. HAD MORE THAN 13 MEETINGS WITH SCHOOL COMMUNITIES TO ENHANCE CAPACITIES AND BUILD MOMENTUM FOR COLLECTIVE ACTION. THE SCHOOL EYE HEALTH COMPONENT OF SSHNP WAS LAUNCHED IN OCTOBER 2015. IN 2018 WE PROVIDED VISION SCREENING AND PROVISION OF EYE GLASSES IN 40 PUBLIC PRIMARY SCHOOLS CONTINUING AND GROWING WHAT WAS STARTED IN 2015. THE ACTIVITIES AND OUTCOMES OF THE SCHOOL EYE HEALTH PROJECT IN 2018 ARE: A. PROVISION OF VISION SCREENING FOR MORE THAN 46,700 SCHOOL CHILDREN IN 40 SCHOOLS. B. PROVISION OF EYE GLASSES FOR MORE THAN 983 SCHOOL CHILDREN FOR UNCORRECTED REFRACTIVE ERROR AND MEDICAL TREATMENT. C. TRAINING OF MORE THAN 924 VOLUNTEER TEACHERS IN VISION SCREENING. SCHOOL WASH - THE QUALITY OF SANITATION FACILITIES IN SCHOOLS CAN IMPACT ATTENDANCE RATES ESPECIALLY OF GIRLS; THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT ONCE THEY HAVE STARTED TO MENSTRUATE. THEREFORE, THERE IS A NEED TO EDUCATE STUDENTS ON SUCH THINGS AS HAND WASHING AND PERSONAL HYGIENE. FOR GIRLS, IT BECAME APPARENT THAT THERE WAS LITTLE UNDERSTANDING ABOUT MENSTRUATION, AND HOW TO MANAGE IT IN A HYGIENIC MANNER. THEREFORE, IN 2018 IFA SOUGHT TO CONTINUE TO ADDRESS THIS NEED THROUGH ITS NEW INITIATIVE TO PROMOTE BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF GIRLS' MENSTRUAL CHALLENGES AND ENABLE SCHOOL GIRLS TO MAKE THEIR OWN SANITARY NAPKINS SO THAT THEY MAY ATTEND SCHOOL DURING MENSES WITHOUT FEAR OF LEAKS. THE MENSTRUAL HYGIENE MANAGEMENT (MHM) WAS IMPLEMENTED IN A TOTAL OF MORE THAN 7 PRIMARY SCHOOLS. THE ACTIVITIES AND OUTCOMES INCLUDED: A. TRAINED 2100 STUDENTS ON HYGIENE PRACTICES INCLUDING PROPER HAND WASHING. PROVIDED ALL NECESSARY INSTRUCTION TO PROMOTE PROPER HAND WASHING. B. DELIVERY OF MENSTRUAL HYGIENE MANAGEMENT TRAINING FOR 2100 FEMALE STUDENTS, 12 SSHN COMMITTEE MEMBERS AND 30 VOLUNTEER TEACHERS. C. UNIFORMS WERE PROVIDED TO 200 STUDENTS AT HANA PRIMARY SCHOOL. VOCATIONAL TRAINING IN 2018, IFFA LAUNCHED ITS VOCATIONAL TRAINING FOR YOUTH, ESPECIALLY TARGETING GIRLS. THE FIRST GROUP OF 11 GIRLS RECEIVED A 6 MONTH-LONG TRAINING AT A WELL RECOGNIZED & ACCREDITED TRAINING CENTER IN FASHION DESIGN & TAILORING IN 2017 AND THE PROGRAM GREW IN 2018 TO INCLUDE MORE YOUTH. MOST HAVE OBTAINED THEIR CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCY AND HAVE GONE ONTO THE JOB MARKET. SAFE WATER IFA HAS INSTALLED WATER TANKS TO ENSURE AVAILABILITY OF WATER DURING WATER SHORTAGE PERIODS. THIS PRACTICE WILL CONTINUE IN THE SCHOOLS IFA IS WORKING IN.
