Pacific Bonsai Museum connects people to nature through the living art of bonsai. Fifty to 60 of the Museum’s 150 bonsai are displayed at any given time in an outdoor fine art museum setting in the open air of a large forest in Federal Way, Washington. Pacific Bonsai Museum is one of only a handful of public museums in the world solely dedicated to bonsai and the only one in the western United States. Offering contemporary exhibitions, docent-led group tours, education, workshops and more, with a flair for PNW-style innovation, the Pacific Bonsai Museum is poised at the forefront of an evolving art form that is transforming in a uniquely American fashion. 33,000+ people from across the globe visit the museum each year.

VISITORS: IN 2018, THE MUSEUM WELCOMED A RECORD NUMBER OF VISITORS - 38,211 PEOPLE FROM LOCAL, REGIONAL AND NATIONAL COMMUNITIES AS WELL AS EVERY CONTINENT AROUND THE GLOBE. COLLECTIONS: THE MUSEUM ACCEPTED THREE BONSAI DONATIONS-A HINOKI CYPRESS, A SCOTCH PINE, AND A WINGED ELM-INTO ITS COLLECTION. EXHIBITIONS: THE MUSEUM OFFERED A SPECIAL EXHIBITION, ELEMENTS OF DESIGN, WITH INTERPRETATION ABOUT LINE, SHAPE, FORM, TEXTURE, COLOR AND SPACE. EACH ELEMENT WAS ACCOMPANIED BY 'NOW IT'S YOUR TURN' SIGNS PROMPTING VISITORS TO APPLY THE DESIGN CONCEPTS TO OTHER BONSAI WORKS OF ART IN THE COLLECTION. THE MUSEUM ALSO DISPLAYED 'STONE IMAGES', A VIEWING STONE EXHIBIT, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE PUGET SOUND BONSAI ASSOCIATION. EDUCATION: IN ITS SECOND YEAR, THE DOCENT PROGRAM GREW WITH ADDITIONAL DOCENTS, EXPANDED TRAINING FOR DOCENTS, REGULARLY SCHEDULED DOCENT DAYS, AND MORE TOURS. WE LAUNCHED A SELF-GUIDED FIELD TRIP PROGRAM FOR STUDENTS WITH OBSERVATION AND HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES, AND COMMUNITY: THE MUSEUM REBRANDED THE SPRING COMMUNITY EVENT TO BECOME BONSAI FEST! PARTNERING WITH THE PUGET SOUND BONSAI ASSOCIATION, THE MUSEUM WELCOMED NEARLY 3,000 VISITORS OVER THE TWO-DAY WORLD BONSAI DAY-MOTHER'S DAY WEEKEND. PARTICIPATED IN THE RHODODENDRON SPECIES BOTANICAL GARDEN'S, BLUE POPPY DAY AND FALL FESTIVAL, WITH THEIR POPULAR, A BONSAI SOLSTICE EVENT CLOSED OUT THE YEAR IN DECEMBER. INNOVATION: THE MUSEUM'S COMMITMENT TO INNOVATION IN BONSAI ART IS DEMONSTRATED BY THE LAB. KICKING OFF IN AUGUST 2018, THE LAB IS A FOUR-PART, MULTI-YEAR EXPERIMENT INVESTIGATING THE INFLUENCE OF INSPIRED ARCHITECTURAL SETTINGS AND EFFECT OF COLLABORATION RESEQUENCING ON THE ART OF BONSAI.
