About

a) LEADERSHIP AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT The Montgomery Institute (TMI) continued to assist East Central Community College and East Mississippi Community College in implementing U.S. Department of Labor Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grants focused on the manufacturing sector. TMI continued to work with Meridian education leaders to operate the Meridian Freedom Project, an intensive after-school and summer program for students. TMI continued to work with area community colleges to maintain the innovative, online advanced manufacturing training system that was initiated in the WIRED grant and continued through the Walmart Foundation America Works Initiative project. TMI continued to work with leaders in West Alabama to support its Coastal Gateway regional development initiative. TMI continued to support the WAEM Mayors Networks creative economy program for rural artists and entrepreneurs in accord with its Educating Artists And Entrepreneurs To Build Creative Economies In Rural Areas grant from AT&T. b) STRATEGIC THINKING AND ANALYSIS The Montgomery Institute initiated, coordinated, and/or managed strategic thinking and analysis activities in the following areas: 1) Provided technical assistance and strategic thinking services to area community colleges for pursuit of innovative programs and resources for workforce development and cyber security education; 2) Continued to work with the Mississippi Development Authority and other partners to promote entrepreneurship program for the State of Mississippi; 3) Continued to facilitate the WAEM Mayors Network meetings where mayors gather every other month to discuss strategic issues of common interest; and 4) Facilitated research and planning sessions among health care providers and community leaders pursuant to a HRSA Rural Health Care Planning grant. c) INFORMATION DISSEMINATION The Montgomery Institute continued as the sponsor of the Kemper, Neshoba, and Noxubee County Tobacco-Free Coalition program that disseminates anti-tobacco information to students in three counties of East Mississippi. TMI held regional meetings and workshops to disseminate information about opportunities for communities and artists develop creative economies. TMI maintains its www.TMI.MS website to provide information to citizens and community leaders in the bi-state region. d) RESOURCE GATHERING During this fiscal year, The Montgomery Institute received grants and contributions supporting seven initiatives that addressed leadership and workforce development, strategic thinking and analysis, and information dissemination: 1) Public funds supporting the East Central Community College TAACCCT project; 2) Public funds supporting the East Mississippi Community College TAACCCT project; 3) Private foundation and business and individual gifts supporting the Meridian Freedom Project; 4) Public funds supporting leadership development and strategic planning for the Coastal Gateway Regional Economic Development Alliance; 5) Public funds supporting the Kemper, Neshoba, and Noxubee County Tobacco-Free Coalition program; 6) Private funds supporting the Educating Artists And Entrepreneurs To Build Creative Economies In Rural Areas grant from the AT&T Foundation; and 7) Private funds supporting the WAEM Mayors Network meetings. TMI also maintained its endowment. TMI received contributions from individuals and businesses to be used as matching funds for grants and to support operations. Activities that revitalize or stabilize low- or moderate-income people or geographies: TMI provided roster artist education for 180 low-to-moderate income children in the region. TMI provided after school, weekend, and summer educational services to 47 low-to-moderate income children in Meridian. TMI managed workforce development projects that provided training to 197 low-to-moderate income individuals in the region. All of the mayors active in the WAEM Mayors Network represent low and moderate income communities/areas and gain strategic, operational, and innovative ideas from attending meetings.
