ANTI-TERRORISM REGIONAL DOMESTIC SECURITY TASK FORCES WERE CREATED BY THE FLORIDA LEGISLATURE (FLORIDA STATUTE 943.0312) AFTER THE TERROR ATTACKS OF 9/11. IN 2002, THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION OF BROWARD COUNTY (SFBC) RECEIVED A 2 MILLION FEDERAL AWARD TO FUND REGION 7 OF THE REGIONAL DOMESTIC SECURITY TASK FORCE. THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION IS TASKED TO OVERSEE THE EXPENDITURE OF FUNDS SPECIFICALLY DONATED FOR USE BY THE DOMESTIC SECURITY TASK FORCE PURSUANT TO FLORIDA STATUTE SECTION 943.0312. ANNUAL CONFERENCE DOMESTIC COUNTER TERRORISM: EVERY YEAR, AND 2018 IS NO EXCEPTION, SFBC FUNDS A COUNTER TERRORISM CONFERENCE FOR THE INTELLIGENCE UNIT OF REGION 7 OF THE DOMESTIC SECURITY TASK FORCE. THESE CONFERENCES ARE AN ESSENTIAL STEP IN THE COORDINATION OF COUNTER INTELLIGENCE RESOURCES FOR THE PREVENTION OF, AND EFFECTIVE RESPONSE TO TERRORIST ACTS IN SOUTH FLORIDA. DOMESTIC SECURITY TASK FORCE FUND: THIS FUND IS RESTRICTED FOR FUNDING DOMESTIC SECURITY PROJECTS AS REQUESTED BY REGION 7 DOMESTIC SECURITY TASK FORCE COMMITTEE AND APPROVED BY THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION OF BROWARD COUNTY. RECENT FUNDING INCLUDES: RAPID RESPONSE VEHICLE: THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE ITS CREATION ENGAGED THE LEGISLATURE IN SUPPORTING ITS DOMESTIC DEFENSE MISSION. THANKS TO THE PRO BONO WORK OF RON BOOK AND RANA BROWN, OF RONALD L. BOOK, P.A., THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION SECURED A 160,000 APPROPRIATION TO PURCHASE A MUCH-NEEDED RAPID RESPONSE VEHICLE (RRV) FOR THE BOMB SQUAD TEAM. THIS VEHICLE WOULD ALLOW FIRST RESPONDERS TO QUICKLY MANEUVER TRAFFIC AND SAFELY CONFRONT AND CONTAIN THE POTENTIAL DANGERS OF EXPLOSIVE THREATS AND WILL BE DELIVERED IN LATE 2018. FALLEN HEROES/MEMORIAL FUNDS SINCE 1999, THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION OF BROWARD COUNTY (SFBC) HAS BEEN INSTRUMENTAL IN THE LIVES OF THE SURVIVING FAMILY MEMBERS OF FALLEN BSO DEPUTIES AND FIRE FIGHTERS. ONE OF THE PILLARS OF SFBC'S MISSION IS TO PROVIDE MORAL AND FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO THE FAMILIES OF THOSE KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY. SFBC ALSO OVERSEES MEMORIAL FUNDS CREATED BY BSO, CONCERNED CITIZENS, AND OTHER ENTITIES TO FUND AND SUPPORT SPECIAL BSO PROGRAMS FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE COMMUNITY. TRAINING PROGRAMS AND INITIATIVES THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION OF BROWARD COUNTY (SFBC) SUPPORTS AND FUNDS BSO TRAINING NEEDS BY PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT FOR PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO ENHANCE COMPETENCE AND LEADERSHIP WITHIN THE AGENCY. CRIME PREVENTION/CIVIC EDUCATION THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION OF BROWARD COUNTY (SFBC) PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE COMMUNITY TO MEET THE SHERIFF AND INTERACT WITH BSO PERSONNEL TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THEIR MISSION, TRAINING AND EQUIPMENT. ALL CITIZENS OF BROWARD COUNTY ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO BECOME MEMBERS AND LEARN MORE ABOUT LAW ENFORCEMENT. SFBC ALSO SEEKS TO MAINTAIN PUBLIC SAFETY AND IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ALL CITIZENS IN BROWARD COUNTY, EITHER DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY, BY FUNDING PUBLIC SAFETY INITIATIVES OF BSO AND OTHER NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS SERVING THE BROWARD COMMUNITY. SFBC CURRENTLY FUNDS AND SUPPORTS THE FOLLOWING BSO CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS: SHOPPING WITH THE SHERIFF: EVERY DECEMBER, AND 2017 IS NO EXCEPTION, SFBC PARTNERS WITH BSO, TO TREAT 100 CHILDREN FROM ALL ACROSS BROWARD COUNTY TO A SPECIAL SHOPPING SPREE WITH THE SHERIFF TO BUY GIFTS FOR THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES. THE YOUTH AND NEIGHBORHOOD SERVICES DIVISION AND BSO SCHOOL RESOURCE DEPUTIES SELECT THE DESERVING CHILDREN FROM SCHOOL PROGRAMS ACROSS BROWARD COUNTY. OPERATION MEDICINE CABINET: THE GOAL IS TO PREVENT DRUG ABUSE. SHRED-A- THON: THE GOAL IS TO PREVENT IDENTITY THEFT. THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BSO FUNDED PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION DISPOSAL EVENTS COMBINED WITH SHREDDING EVENTS IN THE FISCAL YEAR 2017-2018 ACROSS BROWARD COUNTY TO PROMOTE THE SAFE DISPOSAL OF UNUSED, UNWANTED OR EXPIRED MEDICATIONS AND TO SAFELY DISPOSE PERSONAL DOCUMENTS, CHECK STUBS, CREDIT CARD OFFERS, RECEIPTS AND ANY OTHER MATERIAL THAT MIGHT CONTAIN SENSITIVE INFORMATION. THESE EVENTS ARE FREE TO THE PUBLIC. JUST DRIVE TEEN DUI PREVENTION CAMPAIGN: THE GOAL IS TO PREVENT DRIVING ACCIDENTS. SFBC, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BSO FIRE RESCUE, HOLDS PRESENTATIONS THROUGH THE YEAR ACROSS BROWARD COUNTY TO EDUCATE TEENAGERS ABOUT THE CONSEQUENCES OF IMPAIRED DRIVING. SFBC ALSO FUNDS AND SUPPORTS CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS OF THE FOLLOWING NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS: UNITY 4 TEENS AFTER SCHOOL CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAM: UNITY 4 TEENS (U4T) IS A YEAR-ROUND BEFORE/AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM THAT HELPS YOUTH ATTAIN ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL SUCCESS. U4T PARTNERS WITH SIX TITLE I, BROWARD COUNTY, PUBLIC SCHOOLS SERVING 620 AT-RISK YOUTH, AGES 9-11, UNDERPERFORMING ACADEMICALLY AND RESIDING IN HIGH CRIME AREAS. HANDY (HELPING ABUSED NEGLECTED DISADVANTAGED YOUTH): THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION CONTINUED ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH HANDY AND DONATED 5,000 TO THEIR MENTORING PROGRAM. HANDY SERVES MORE THAN 1,200 AT-RISK CHILDREN THROUGH COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAMS THAT FOCUS ON EDUCATION, YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY. THE PRESTIGE CLUB ANTI BULLYING PROGRAM: THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION FUNDED HOOT CAMP JR. FOR ANTI-BULLYING TO EDUCATE SMALL CHILDREN IN KINDERGARTEN ABOUT THE DANGERS OF BULLYING. THIS PROGRAM FEATURES INTERACTION BETWEEN KIDS, OOPSEY THE CLOWN AND HOOTY OWL. 2018 WALK LIKE MADD: THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION FOR A THIRD YEAR SPONSORED THE FORT LAUDERDALE WALK LIKE MADD AWARENESS AND CRIME PREVENTION EVENT. OVER 2,000 ATTENDEES HELP RAISED OVER 275,000 TO FIGHT DRUNK AND DISTRACTED DRIVING IN BROWARD COUNTY. DONATE 5,000 TO MONROE COUNTY DOD HURRICANE RELIEF: IN MAY 2018 THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION JOINED FORCES WITH BSO DOD, PALM BEACH DOD AND MIAMI- DADE DOD TO HELP MONROE COUNTY DOD RECOVER FROM LAST YEAR'S HURRICANE DEVASTATION. A K-9 CAUSE RAISED OVER 33,000.00 TO PROVIDE HEALTHCARE FOR RETIRED K-9 FROM ANY LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY IN BROWARD COUNTY WHEN K-9 RETIRES, THEIR LAW ENFORCEMENT HANDLERS GRACIOUSLY ADOPT THEM AND CONTINUE TO CARE FOR THEM ON THEIR OWN. RECOGNIZING THAT THE MEDICAL AND HEALTHCARE FOR THE K-9 CAN GET QUITE COSTLY DUE TO THEIR YEARS OF POLICE SERVICE, WE CREATED THE SHERIFF'S FOUNDATION OF BROWARD RETIRED K-9 HEALTHCARE FUND.
