Mission

The Sacramento Literacy Foundation's mission is to improve lives by collaborating with organizations in our community to advance literacy.

About

This year the Foundation granted the Library $209,561 for programs and materials representing an decrease in funding to the library over last year. Support was given with an emphasis on Summer Reading and increased children's literacy programs. Of the 209,561, $100,000 was given to the Library's Summer Reading Program, $83,405 came from the Books and Materials Endowment, and the Sacramento Room Endowment dedicated to digitizing the Library's archive. The remaining $26,156 was dedicated to branch services. These positive results represent our strategic focus on enhancing children's literacy by leveraging the Library's 28 locations. The Foundation's long-term focus on Endowment building resulted in raising more than $281,839 in endowment support including $204,051 raised for the Children's Literacy Endowment and $75,000 raised for the SPLF Operations Endowment. The Foundation's efforts to increase support for the Library through broad, mission-aligned, initiatives includes the annual events Authors on the Move, Walk4Literacy, the Big Day of Giving, the Community Literacy Map and the role the Foundation has taken on as the Sacramento Campaign for Grade-Level Reading Community Lead. All of these events increase community awareness and support for the Foundation and Library. A total of 200 volunteers representing 900 hours helped us advance our mission during these events. Authors on the Move attracted more than 350 people including 42 new donors and 40 regional authors. The event brings donors close to our mission and informs them about the children's literacy crisis in Sacramento. Through the Walk4Literacy, the Foundation partnered with 18 children's literacy organizations to advance the awareness and increase the funding of literacy programs. The Foundation secured corporate funders to maintain the Community Literacy Map which shows exactly where children are reaching grade-level and where they are not. The Big Day of Giving is a community activity to grow community support and continue to bring the literacy community together. This year the Foundation became the community designee for the National Campaign for Grade-Level and because of that a broader literacy movement is officially developing in Sacramento.
