Youth leadership afterschool programs: Austin Voices provides support to teams of student leaders, called Stand Up! chapters. These student leaders work alongside adults in their schools and communities to reduce barriers to graduation and improve campus climate. Through these Stand Up! clubs, students create and work on the implementation of their school improvement campaigns by meeting weekly to identify issues on their compuses, collect data on these issues, analyze the data, and launch campaigns to enact positive change concerning the issue(s). The students work with principals, faculty, campus advisory councils, and community members to find innovative solutions to campus challenges. Austin Voices supports students in this work by providing trainings, mentoring, and support. Recent activities have included sponsoring school board candidate forums, joining to fight school closure in the state, developing initiatives to improve attendance, and reducing dropout rates.
