Mission

Our Mission: Center for Houston's Future works to solve our region's toughest problems by engaging diverse leaders, providing impactful research, and defining actionable strategies. The Center was founded in 2000 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to 'look over the horizon' and identify problems and opportunities which lie ahead for the eight county Houston region. The overarching benefit to the community is that of an independent and respected source of Leadership, Research and Solutions.

STRATEGIC PLANNING & RESEARCH: IN COLLABORATION WITH PARTNERS AND WITH COMMUNITY INPUT, CHF WORKS TO IDENTIFY THE IMPORTANT LONG-RANGE ISSUES FACING THE REGION AND FACILITATE THE DEVELOPMENT OF PROGRAMS/INITIATIVES TO DEVELOP/IMPLEMENT SOLUTIONS. OVER THE PAST YEAR, THE CENTER HAS UNDERTAKEN WORK IN THE FOLLOWING AREAS: COMMUNITY INDICATORS: CHF HAS DONE A GREAT DEAL OF INTENSIVE WORK TO BUILD COMMUNITY INDICATOR RESEARCH. TO SHOWCASE THIS DATA, CHF BUILT THE INTERACTIVE INDICATOR WEBSITE WITH A STRONG BASELINE OF COMPARABLE FACTS ON: CIVIC VITALITY, HEALTH, EDUCATION, NATURAL/BUILT ENVIRONMENT, ARTS/ CULTURE, PHILANTHROPY, DIVERSITY, AND PUBLIC SAFETY. BASED ON THIS DATA, CHF HAS PUBLISHED REPORTS AND FOSTERED COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT THROUGH WORKSHOPS, SUMMER SALONS,COMMUNITY UNIVERSITIES, ETC. MORE RECENTLY, WE HAVE ENGAGED WITH KPMG TO IDENTIFY REGIONAL ECONOMIC BENCHMARKS FOR THE REGION, AND, BASED ON THIS WORK, THE CENTER HAS RECENTLY UPDATED ITS INDICATOR RESEARCH. IMMIGRATION: GIVEN THE SIGNIFICANCE OF DIVERSITY AND IMMIGRATION TO OUR REGION, THE CENTER, WITH SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES AND INDIVIDUALS, HAS UNDERTAKEN A MAJOR STRATEGIC INITIATIVE OVER THE LAST 18 MONTHS TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF IMMIGRATION AND IMMIGRANTS ON THE HOUSTON REGION. THIS INITIATIVE HAS CONSISTED OF SEVERAL WORKSTREAMS. SHORT DOCUMENTARY FILMS: THE CENTER WORKED WITH VIDEO PRODUCTION COMPANY THE RATIONAL MIDDLE TO PRODUCE A SERIES OF SHORT DOCUMENTARIES THAT PRESENT THE FACTS ON IMMIGRATION, FRAMED WITH HISTORICAL CONTEXT AND PERSONAL STORIES. THESE FILMS FOCUS ON THE CHALLENGES FACING THE COUNTRY THROUGH THE EYES OF IMMIGRANTS, MUNICIPALITIES, BUSINESS OWNERS AND CITIZENS ON THE GROUND CONFRONTED WITH THIS ISSUE. ECONOMIC ANALYSIS: THE CENTER, WITH SUPPORT OF JPMORGAN CHASE, RECENTLY STUDIED HOW HOUSTON'S ECONOMIC GROWTH IS INTERTWINED WITH ITS DEMOGRAPHY. THE RESULTING REPORT EXAMINES HOWIMMIGRATION HAS HISTORICALLY FUELED THE REGION'S ECONOMY AND WHY IT WILL BE KEY TO OUR ECONOMIC FUTURE. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: THE CENTER DEVELOPED COLLABORATIONS WITH SEVERAL NATIONAL AND LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS TO SHARE FACTUAL INFORMATION ABOUT IMMIGRATION, TO BUILD CONSENSUS AND TO CREATE A COMMUNITY OF VOICES DEMANDING SENSIBLE IMMIGRATION REFORM AT BOTH THE STATE AND FEDERAL LEVEL. FUTURE OF ENERGY: CHF WILL LOOK AT HOW THE REGION CAN CONTINUE TO THRIVE AS THE ENERGY CAPITAL OF THE WORLD NOT BY ABANDONING OIL AND GAS, BUT BY EXPANDING BEYOND IT. IT IS DOING SO, BY BRINGING TOGETHER SENIOR ENERGY EXECUTIVES, CLIMATE EXPERTS AND OTHER THOUGHTLEADERS TO BEGIN OUR INITIATIVE ON THE NEW ENERGY ECONOMY AND INNOVATION.
