About

MRI CONTINUES TO WORK TOWARD TRANSLATING RESEARCH ON NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASES INTO PATIENT CARE AND DISEASE PREVENTION. MRI HAS BEEN WORKING TO ESTABLISH THE CENTER FOR COGNITIVE AND METABOLIC WELLNESS. WHILE NOT UP AND RUNNING YET DUE TO FUNDING CHALLENGES AND THE INTRICACIES OF PROCESSING PATIENT SAMPLES, THE CENTER CONTINUES TO BE A GOAL OF MRI. WHEN THE CENTER OPENS, IT WILL PROVIDE A MUCH-NEEDED MODEL FOR SPEEDING APPLICATION OF RESEARCH DISCOVERIES TO THE PATIENT. THE INSTITUTE RECEIVED A GRANT FROM THE NIH IN THE AMOUNT OF $405,000/YEAR FOR FIVE YEARS ($2 MILLION TOTAL) AND IS CONTINUING TO FUND RESEARCH ON NEUROTRANSMITTERS AND THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN NEURODEGENERATIVE DISEASE. THE INSTITUTE ALSO HAS THREE SUB-AWARDS WITH COLLABORATORS TOTALING CLOSE TO $210,000. IN ADDITION TO GRANT RELATED INCOME, MRI HAS BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO HAVE EXTRA CAGE SPACE THAT HAS BEEN OFFERED TO INVESTIGATORS OUTSIDE OF THE INSTITUTE WHOSE HOME INSTITUTION'S PER DIEMS ARE COST PROHIBITIVE. THE FDA HAS RECENTLY MADE IT EASIER TO GET PROMISING COMPOUNDS INTO CLINICAL TRIALS AND AS A RESULT, SEVERAL FOR-PROFIT PHARMA COMPANIES AND A PRIVATE FOUNDATION HAVE REACHED OUT TO COLLABORATE WITH MRI TO TEST PROMISING THERAPEUTICS FOR TREATING PROTEIN MISFOLDING DISEASES AND HUNTINGTON'S DISEASE. THE SPONSORED RESEARCH AGREEMENTS SIGNED WITH THESE ENTITIES ARE FOR FUNDING IN EXCESS OF $430,000.
