Mission

Western Sustainability Exchange (WSE) was founded in 1994 to conserve the abundance of the Northern Rockies including its open spaces; wildlife habitats; soil, air, and water resources; rural communities; and agricultural land and heritage. Today, WSE boasts important successes in bringing together people who are committed to the future of the region. The organization has aided over 1,300 ranchers design and implement innovative and regenerative production strategies, developed value-added markets for these producers, including carbon offset payments for sequestering carbon, educated thousands of consumers about the benefits of sustainable purchasing, increased access to local foods for citizens of the region, and addressed climate change by drawing carbon dioxide out of the air.

About

WESTERN SUSTAINABILITY EXCHANGE HAS BEEN PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. THE MARKET CONNECTION PROGRAM HAS TRAINED ALMOST 800 RANCHERS AND FARMERS ABOUT SUSTAINABLE TECHNIQUES AND, AS A RESULT, ALMOST A MILLION ACRES OF AGRICULTURAL LAND AND OPEN SPACES ARE BEING MANAGED SUSTAINABLY TODAY. THE PROGRAM CONNECTS PRODUCERS USING SUSTAINABLE STEWARDSHIP PRACTICES TO OUR NETWORK OF LOCAL CHEFS, CATERERS, CONCESSIONAIRES, GROCERS AND RESTAURANTS WHO PRODUCE LOCALLY PRODUCED FOOD PRODUCTS. TO DATE WSE HAS OPENED MARKETS FOR MORE THAN 130 PRODUCERS. PROGRAMS WITHIN MARKET CONNECTION INCLUDE "MONTANA FARM TO RESTAURANT CONNECTION", A SEASONAL WEEKLY FARMERS MARKET, A HARVEST CELEBRATION, THE "STEER TO STEAK" PROGRAM, YOUNG ENTREPRENEURIAL STEWARDSHIP AND OTHERS. THE STEER TO STEAK PROGRAM REWARDS CATTLE RANCHERS WHO CONSERVE OPEN SPACE AND PROTECT FISH AND WILDLIFE HABITAT, AND SECURES LARGE-SCALE MARKETS WILLING TO PAY A PREMIUM FOR SUSTAINABLY CERTIFIED BEEF, AND COORDINATES ALL PHASES OF THE SALE AND DISTRIBUTION. THE FARM TO RESTAURANT PROGRAM RECRUITS FOOD SERVICE BUSINESSES TO BUY FROM LOCAL CERTIFIED PRODUCERS AND FACILITATES RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PRODUCERS AND BUYERS. THE FARMERS MARKET GENERATES SALES FOR LOCAL FARMERS, RANCHERS AND ARTISANS, AND THE YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR PROGRAM TEACHES CHILDREN BUSINESS BASICS AND SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES.
