Established in 1996, Garden City Harvest started as the community's only proactive solution to food insecurity, to ensure people could meet their basic needs for nutritious food. Garden City Harvest builds community through agriculture by growing produce with and for Missoula community members, offering education and training in ecologically conscious agriculture and using their network of 20 farms and gardens for the restoration of youth and adults.

GARDEN CITY HARVEST WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1996 AS THE COMMUNITYS ONLY PROACTIVE SOLUTION TO FOOD INSECURITY TO ENSURE PEOPLE COULD MEET THEIR BASIC NEEDS FOR FOOD WITH GOOD NUTRITIONAL VALUE. THE FARMING AND GARDENING NONPROFIT NOW MANAGES 21 FARMS, COMMUNITY GARDENS AND SCHOOL GARDENS THROUGHOUT MISSOULA, MONTANA'S URBAN CORE. ITS MISSION IS TO PLANT SEEDS AND GROW TOGETHER TO CREATE A HEALTHY MISSOULA. ITS FOUR PROGRAMS IMPACT ROUGHLY 20,000 COMMUNITY MEMBERS ANNUALLY. THOSE PROGRAMS ARE DESCRIBED AS FOLLOWS:COMMUNITY GARDENS ARE GREEN SPACES WHERE COMMUNITY MEMBERS CAN AFFORDABLY GROW FOOD TO FEED THEIR FAMILIES. GARDEN CITY HARVEST PROVIDES INDIVIDUAL GARDEN PLOTS, TOOLS, WATER, COMPOST, COMMON SPACE AND THE KNOWLEDGE AND GUIDANCE OF OTHERS TO ENSURE GARDENERS SUCCESS. IN 2018, THE ORGANIZATION RENTED 365 GARDEN PLOTS AT NINE GARDEN LOCATIONS, PRIMARILY IN HIGH DENSITY, LOW TO MODERATE INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS IN MISSOULA. FARM TO SCHOOL PROVIDES EXPERIMENTIAL, HANDS-ON LEARNING EXPERIENCES THAT ENCOURAGE STUDENTS IN GRADES K-12, ENCOURAGING THEM TO EXPLORE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN FARMING AND THE FOOD THEY EAT. FARM TO SCHOOL STAFF MEMBERS MANAGE SEVEN SCHOOL GARDENS, PROMOTE AND GROW LOCAL FOOD FOR SCHOOL LUNCHES, OFFER IN-CLASS LESSONS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, AND FARM FIELD TRIPS AND GARDEN LESSONS DURING THE GROWING SEASON. THIS PROGRAM SERVES ROUGHLY 6,500 STUDENTS PER YEAR. NEIGHBORHOOD FARMS AT FOUR URBAN FARMS, GARDEN CITY HARVEST STAFF MEMBERS GROW TONS OF FRESH PRODUCE, MAKING IT ACCESSIBLE TO THE COMMUNITYS MOST VULNERABLE CITIZENS THROUGH INTENTIONAL PARTNERSHIPS WITH LOCAL SERVICE AGENCIES. GARDEN CITY HARVEST PROMOTES ORGANIC AND SUSTAINABLE FARMING PRACTICES AT ALL OF ITS SITES. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT OFFERS EMPLOYMENT AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES TO MORE THAN 50 TEENS ANNUALLY ON TWO URBAN FARMS. THE TEENS, WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH OVERWHELMING PERSONAL CHALLENGES, LEARN JOB AND LIFE SKILLS, BUILD PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS THAT HELP THEM BECOME A PART OF SOMETHING GREATER THAN THEMSELVES, AND THAT HELP THEM BECOME PRODUCTIVE, CONTRIBUTING MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY.
