Mission

TO PROVIDE EARLY HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATION AND KINDERGARTEN TO CHILDREN IN THE MISSOULA COMMUNITY AGES 3 TO 6 YEARS.

About

During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019 Missoula Community School (MCS) provided a high quality Early Childhood Program for 87 children ages two through six. This fiscal year we introduced a new two year old program to the school. The school added another classroom to their space allowing for this new classroom, complete with the ability to work on toilet training with these children. Summer Programs were offered as well serving children ages three through eight. This fiscal year we also held a summer camp for children ages 9-14 that introduced beginning camp counselor skills. MCS is licensed through the State of Montana as a child care center (Provider # PV82658). We are in compliance with all child care regulations, including continual professional training hours. This year we have continued in the STARS to Quality program, but have changed to a pre-STAR level. During this fiscal year the school employed a full-time director, six full-time teachers, four part-time assistants, a part-time office assistant, one part-time custodian, and regular extended care providers and substitutes. One teacher spent one day a week as the school's mindfulness coordinator, developing lessons for each class to participate in and providing community outreach. We also had a foster grandparent in the classroom most days through March 2019. MCS is a progressive school following best practices in early childhood education. During the fiscal year ending on 6/30/2019, we had it declared Superhero of Kindness Week in February and performed (and encouraged others to perform) random acts of kindness. Working with another preschool in town, we held a Color Run for families and the general community, bringing in about 100 runners participating in either a 5K, 1 mile fun run, or toddler dash. The schools Mindfulness Coordinator travelled to Toronto for a national conference for Mindfulness in Education in May. Working with an approved professional development specialist, the school was able to offer training hours for specific staff meetings and training days, totaling eight provided continuing education hours for staff. The school continues to utilize many volunteers, mostly parents, within the school. Parents help with special activities, celebrations, as well as helping with day to day operations, such as taking home laundry. Parent volunteer hours total an average of 300 hours per school year. The school continues to be a place families from all economic backgrounds can attend. A scholarship fund is present in our budget. Families apply through a national organization, SSS by NAIS. Our board of directors committed to helping two children from a refugee family have access to quality care through our program.
