About

Americorps SR1 provided free high-quality evidence-based educational strategies to over 300 underserved K-12th grade students in central Mississippi in order to improve educational outcomes and college readiness. Services were provided four days a week during non-school hours including Saturdays for 12 hours a week. Additionally, a 5-week innovative hands-on summer camp to combat summer lost in core academic areas especially literacy and math was held as well. Over 95 percent of students showed growth in math and literacy and one hundred percent of students were promoted to the next grade. The goal was to increase college readiness as measured by 70 percent of 300 students to show improvements in math and/or literacy. Based on the services provided and educational outcomes obtained by SR1's Americorps program, the organization received the Hugh Peck Award. The award is given to the Mississippi entity that is providing innovative education and receiving positive educational outcomes for underserved K-12th grade students.
