About this organization
Mission
TO CONDUCT AND SUPPORT RESEARCH IN PROMOTING MENTAL HEALTH TO YOUTH AND ADULTS, AND PROVIDE MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES AS PART OF PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN.
About
WE PROVIDE QUALITY AND ACCESSIBLE EVIDENCE-BASED INTERVENTIONS TO YOUTH THROUGH COLLABORATION WITH HIGH-POVERTY SCHOOLS IN THE WASHINGTON METRO COMMUNITY. RESILIENCE ACROSS BORDERS IMPLEMENTS AN EVIDENCE-BASED GROUP INTERVENTION, THE RESILIENCE BUILDER PROGRAM (RBP) AT LOCAL ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND USES RESEARCH TO INFORM THE BEST PRACTICES TO DEVELOP AND MAINTAIN RESILIENCE AND SELF-CONTROL. WE KNOW THAT MENTAL HEALTH STATUS IS ASSOCIATED WITH ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, GRADUATION RATES, RISK TAKING, AND DELINQUENCY. THEREFORE, WE AIM TO HELP YOUTH ENHANCE SELF-CONTROL AND RESILIENCE - THE ABILITY TO ADAPT TO LIFE AND OVERCOME ITS CHALLENGES. OUR INTERVENTIONS FOCUS ON THESE TWO TARGETS BECAUSE THEY HAVE SHOWN TO CONTRIBUTE TO YOUTH'S EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL WELL-BEING AND A HEALTHY TRANSITION INTO ADULTHOOD. FINDINGS FROM OUR RESEARCH SUGGEST THAT THE RBP IMPROVES STUDENTS' EMOTIONAL CONTROL, INTERPERSONAL SKILLS AND DECREASES THEIR NEGATIVE EMOTIONS, AS WELL AS ACADEMIC MOTIVATION AND CLASSROOM ENGAGEMENT. IN THE 2020-2021 WE WILL BEGIN TO TRAIN TEACHERS TO DELIVER THE RESILIENCE INTERVENTIONS TO WHOLE CLASSROOMS. IN ADDITION TO OUR CURRENT INTERVENTION PROGRAM AND RESEARCH, DR. MARY ALVORD, IN HER ROLE AS PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, IS AVAILABLE TO SPEAK ON TOPICS RELATED TO RESILIENCE ACROSS BORDERS' INTERESTS INCLUDING RESILIENCE AND EVIDENCE BASED TREATMENTS AS WELL AS PROVIDE TRAININGS IN IMPLEMENTATION OF THE RESILIENCE BUILDER PROGRAM .
