More about this organization

Mission

Youth Forward is creating smart solutions to improve the health, education and wellbeing of our most vulnerable children and youth. To help all kids reach their potential, we must take into account that one size doesn't fit all; some kids face greater obstacles than others and need additional support. We need to consider how the realities of poverty, racism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination affect our children and youth and the systems that support them. By lifting up all children, we build stronger families and communities.

About

Worked with the District Attorney and City Council to clear or reduce the criminal records of over 6,000 Sacramento residents with prior marijuana convictions.Led the planning process for a youth leadership summer training camp with Brown Issues Forum, a latino student organization. Co-led a coalition of youth organizations in developing a campaign that seeks to require the City of Sacramento to invest more of its unrestricted funding in children and youth services. In addition to working in Sacramento, Youth Forward built a statewide network of youth and racial justice organizations and accomplished the following:Shaped the implementation of the Community Reinvestment grants program, a new $50 million grant program funded by state cannabis tax revenues that supports nonprofits and local health departments in providing services to communities impacted by the War on Drugs.Educated over 100 nonprofit organizations on opportunities to expand services for the prevention and treatment of youth substance abuse through accessing new state funding sources created by cannabis tax revenues.Held a legislative staff briefing on the health impacts of marijuana use at the State Capitol. To date this has been the only briefing on health issues associated with marijuana use for legislative staff. Advocated for legislation in the areas of records expungement and public health. Finally, Youth Forward provided consulting support to a youth leadership effort in Solano County that is working to increase mental health supports for students on school campuses.
