About
THE CITY OF STOCKTON CONTINUED TO BE OUR PRIMARY SITE IN 2018. IN ADDITION TO THE SSB HEALTH EDUCATION CAMPAIGN, WE WERE ASKED BY THE CENTER FOR ECOLITERACY TO ASSIST WITH ADDITIONAL OUTREACH AND EDUCATION OF A SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM TO LOW-INCOME FAMILIES IN STOCKTON WHOSE CHILDREN ATTEND LODI UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. IN YEAR ONE, TOLA FELLOWS IDENTIFIED 15 ORGANIZATIONS THAT AGREED TO BE A PART OF A COALITION TO INVESTIGATE POLICIES AIMED AT REDUCING OBESITY AND DIABETES. BY YEAR TWO, TOLA WORKED WITH THESE ORGANIZATIONS AND LOCAL TEACHERS TO CONDUCT A TOTAL OF 92 PRESENTATIONS ACROSS THE COMMUNITY AND HAVE FACE-TO-FACE CONVERSATIONS WITH OVER 1,500 RESIDENTS DISTRIBUTING INFORMATIONAL PIECES ABOUT THE EFFECTS OF SUGARY DRINK CONSUMPTION. THE EXTENSIVE OUTREACH FROM YEAR ONE REGARDING THE DIRECT LINK OF TYPE 2 DIABETES AND SUGARY DRINKS, ALLOWED THE PREVIOUSLY ESTABLISHED COALITION, FELLOWS AND YOUTH, IN YEAR TWO TO GATHER LETTERS OF SUPPORT FOR A HEALTH POLICY INITIATIVE TO TACKLE DIABETES. THE EFFORT BECAME KNOWN AS THE "LESS SODA, BETTER HEALTH" CAMPAIGN. THE EXTENSIVE COMMUNITY OUTREACH WAS DONE VIA DOOR-TO-DOOR, HOLDING ONE-ON-ONE CONVERSATIONS, AND COLLECTING 501 LETTERS OF SUPPORT, INCLUDING 122 FROM LOCAL BUSINESSES STATING THEIR SUPPORT FOR A POLICY LIKE THE "SODA TAX." OVER 100 RESIDENTS ATTENDED A CITY COUNCIL MEETING TO PRESENT THEIR LETTERS OF SUPPORT. AT THAT MEETING, THEY RECEIVED A PROCLAMATION FROM THE STOCKTON MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL DECLARING JULY 17TH "DIABETES AWARENESS DAY." IN ADDITION, 20 YOUTH LEADERS TOOK THIS ISSUE FROM THE SAN JOAQUIN VALLEY TO THE STATE CAPITAL AND SPOKE PASSIONATELY TO THE LEGISLATURE AND THEIR REPRESENTATIVES ABOUT THE NEED FOR STRONG LEADERS IN ADOPTING HEALTH POLICIES THAT AFFECT COMMUNITIES OF COLOR AND YOUTH. NEWS SEGMENTS AND NEWSPAPERS CAPTURED THE "STOCKTON YOUTH" IN ACTION.
