Through the volunteer income tax assistance (VITA) coalition, UWYC partners with the IRS and other community agencies to provide free tax preparation to qualifying individuals and families. UWYC engages, provides training and certifies volunteers to serve clients in four sites throughout Yuma County. The goal of the VITA program is to help people properly file their tax returns, avoid predatory lending sites, ensure they obtain their qualifying credits, and pave the way to financial stability through savings and asset building. Informational brochures are available at all sites explaining their rights, answers to frequently asked questions, and information pertaining to additional resources in the community. UWYC VITA sites helped close to 1,200 Yuma County residents with their income taxes and generated over $2 million dollars in refunds to the community.
