About this organization
Mission
The Biomimicry Institute empowers people to create nature-inspired solutions for a healthy planet. Our mission is to create the tools and make the information available to the community of people who design and make our 'stuff.' By bringing biologists and designers together in collaboration, we work to promote the transfer of ideas, designs and strategies from biology to sustainable human design. Life has been on earth for 3.8 billion years, and in that time, organisms have learned to do everything we humans want to do without polluting the planet. By emulating nature’s time-tested designs and processes—a process called biomimicry--we have the opportunity to restore our soil, forests, and oceans, create healthy products, and reverse the effects of climate change. - Janine Benyus
About
DESIGN CHALLENGES AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS: BGDC AND LAUNCHPADFOR THE LAST TEN YEARS, THE BIOMIMICRY INSTITUTE HAS WORKED WITH UNIVERSITY STUDENTS AND FIRST-TIME ENTREPRENEURS AROUND THE WORLD THROUGH ITS DESIGN CHALLENGE PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM'S GOAL IS TO PROVIDE A PLATFORM FOR LEARNING ABOUT, AND PRACTICING, NATURE-INSPIRED DESIGN, AND THEN APPLYING THAT DESIGN TO TRUE SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGES AROUND THE WORLD.IN 2014, THE BIOMIMICRY STUDENT DESIGN CHALLENGE, OFFICIALLY MORPHED INTO THE BIOMIMICRY GLOBAL DESIGN CHALLENGE (BGDC) TO ALLOW FOR INDEPENDENT PROFESSIONALS TO ENTER. THE BGDC IS A WORLDWIDE COMPETITION THAT ASKS STUDENTS AND ENTREPRENEURS TO SOLVE PROBLEMS AROUND CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS USING BIOMIMICRY. THE BIOMIMICRY LAUNCHPAD TAKES THE TOP TEAMS FROM THE CHALLENGE AND HELPS THEM TURN THEIR DESIGN CONCEPTS INTO FUNCTIONING PROTOTYPES THAT THEY WILL HOPEFULLY THEN TAKE TO MARKET. THE $100,000 RAY OF HOPE PRIZETM IS AWARDED TO THE MOST PROMISING TEAM TO HELP THEM CONTINUE DEVELOPING THEIR ENTERPRISE. IN 2018, 89 TEAMS FROM 16 COUNTRIES APPLIED TO BGDC OR THE LAUNCHPAD, WITH 6 TEAMS PARTICIPATING IN THE LAUNCHPAD. THE RAY OF HOPE PRIZE WAS AWARDED TO NUCLEARIO, A TEAM FROM BRAZIL, WHO CREATED A SYSTEM TO REDUCE THE FAIL RATE OF SEEDLINGS IN REFORESTATION. YOUTH EDUCATION IN 2018, THE BIOMIMICRY INSTITUTE PILOTED THE YOUTH DESIGN CHALLENGE FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THIS PROGRAM IS A HANDS-ON, PROJECT-BASED EXPERIENCE THAT PROVIDES CLASSROOM AND NONFORMAL EDUCATORS WITH AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY, AND AN INTRODUCTION TO BIO-INSPIRED DESIGN. THE YDC IS A UNIQUE APPROACH TO STEM THAT HELPS EDUCATORS MEET CURRICULUM REQUIREMENTS AND ENHANCE CREATIVITY WHILE RECONNECTING STUDENTS WITH NATURE AND TEACHING SUSTAINABLE DESIGN. THE PILOT IN THE SPRING OF 2018 ENGAGED 54 U.S. TEACHERS AND MORE THAN 600 STUDENTS. THE PROGRAM CONTINUED IN THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR.
Interesting data from their 2020 990 filing
The filing outlines the non-profit's goal as “The purposes of this corporation shall be to naturalize biomimicry in the culture by promoting the transfer of ideas, designs, and strategies from biology to sustainable human systems design. about biomimicry: efforts to address climate change, consumption, pollution, deforestation, and the myriad of other issues that threaten the planet have to date been primarily reactive and wholly insufficient. the strategies we relied on to provide food, water, energy, shelter, and comfort to a growing population are now seen as compounding rather than solving the problems. biomimicry is a new science that studies nature's best ideas, abstracts the deep design principles, and then emulates these designs and processes to solve human problems. the biomimicry institute is the foremost authority and all around go-to place for biomimicry information, through its two main programs; ask nature and biomimicry design challenges and other education programs.”.
When explaining its purpose, the activities were outlined as: “The purposes of this corporation shall be to naturalize biomimicry in the culture by promoting the transfer of ideas, designs, and strategies from biology to sustainable human systems design.”.
