In 2018 we had many cats/kittens with serious medical issues. In June we took in 10 kittens from a hoarding situation. Because the weights varied from 12 ounces to 3 pounds, we assumed there were 2 or 3 litters. They were all tested and negative for FELV. They were all underweight, had a runny nose and eyes, and some were sneezing. All were covered with fleas, but because of their size and unconfirmed treatment info from the previous owner we couldn't treat other than to bathe them with Dawn dish liquid. Temperatures were taken. Some kittens were tested for ear mites, some given fluids because they were dehydrated, all received Nemex for round worms. All had to be treated for ring worm and because of their fragile condition and young age we could not treat with normal medication. They had weekly medicated baths for about 4 months before they all came up free of ring worm. Two of the kittens were missing one eyeball each. The eye sockets had to be cleaned and then stitched permanently closed to prevent infection. These kittens went through so much and for the longest time, we were not sure they would all make it or not. Unfortunately, we did have to euthanize one of the kittens that failed to thrive and after tests we determined the kitten had cancer. All of the other kittens were adopted around the end of the year. This was a six month labor of love for their foster mom.In March 2018 we were contacted by Multnomah County Animal Control. They had received a stray and tried to reach the registered owners. When they could not be located, they contacted us as our name always stays on the history of that chip. Diva was born in 2003 and adopted in 2007. She was extremely sick, but without hesitation we picked her up as soon as they would release her. It was our obligation to care for this girl in her final days. I am proud that we could care for her and make her safe and comfortable even if it was for a very short time.This is just two examples of the dedication and commitment Furry Friends has to our mission of helping homeless and abandoned cats. Our hearts go out to the cats that were left behind by their owners and are scared and needing help. We cannot turn them away. We just wish we could help more.
