About this organization
Mission
ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION AND RESEARCH, FOCUSED ON THE GREAT BASIN DESERT, ESPECIALLY IN THE MALHEUR NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE IN HARNEY COUNTY, OREGON
About
WATER SYSTEM REPLACEMENT: THE STATION WAS BUILT IN THE MID-1960S AND, AFTER 50 YEARS, THE ORIGINAL WATER SYSTEM FAILED ON FEBRUARY 18, 2018. THE WELL AND PUMP WERE FORTUNATELY FINE BUT ALL THE PIPING HAD TO BE REPLACED. THIS ENTAILED COORDINATION WITH THE MALHEUR NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, WHOSE LAND THE STATION SITS ON, AN ARCHEOLOGIC ASSESSMENT AND THE AGREEMENT OF THE LOCAL PAIUTE TRIBE. THE STATION HAD TO CANCEL ALL GUEST VISITATION AND ALL PROGRAMS FOR THE SPRING, OUR PEAK SEASON DURING WHICH MUCH OF OUR INCOME IS RECEIVED. WE PUT THE WORD OUT TO OUR MEMBERS AND ON OUR WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK PAGES, TOGETHER WITH SENDING OUT AN APPEAL LETTER TO FUND A NEW WATER SYSTEM. THE RESPONSE FROM OUR MEMBERS WAS OVERWHELMING, RAISING MORE THAN THE COST OF REPLACING THE WATER SYSTEM. THE SYSTEM WAS COMPLETELY REPLACED AND WE REOPENED IN JULY. VISITATION FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR WAS VERY GOOD AND WE WERE ABLE TO WEATHER THE STORM. ACADEMIC PROGRAMS: THE MALHEUR FIELD STATION OFFERS SEVERAL COURSES EVERY YEAR THROUGH THE ROAD SCHOLAR PROGRAM (FORMERLY ELDERHOSTEL). THE STATION ALSO OFFERS NATURALIST SERVICES AND SHORT PROGRAMS. THE 2018 ROAD SCHOLAR PROGRAMS INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING: - ORNITHOLOGY IN THE GREAT BASIN, 13 PARTICIPANTS, 5 DAYS IN THE FIELD, NUMEROUS EVENING PROGRAMS. NATURALIST SERVICES: CUSTOMIZED EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS, DEMONSTRATIONS AND OUTINGS SHORT PROGRAMS: ASTRONOMY, ORNITHOLOGY, MUSIC, ETC.
