About

Support the development and production or new plays and works, as well as the education of adults and youth in the theater arts. Founded in 1989, The Marsh has lived up to its moniker as a breeding ground for new performance and has grown into one of the Bay Areas most visible and highly respected performance venues. The Marsh cemented its future by purchasing its Valencia Street building in 1996. It currently presents over 600 performances each year between its San Francisco venue and its second location in the Downtown Berkeley Arts District. Work developed at The Marsh has received local, national and international critical acclaim and has moved on to venues across the country and abroad. The Marsh has redefined and deepened the genre of solo performance, making it the premiere place to develop solo performance. The Marsh is the recipient of many prestigious awards including three Will Glickman Awards for Best New Play, the National Harmony Award for Musical Theater, Bay Area Critics Circle Awards, and the American Theater Critics Association Osborn Award. The Marsh has a vibrant multi-arts children's program, Marsh Youth Theater, which is open to all children regardless of financial resources. In 2018, Marsh Youth Theater offered 18 classes and summer camps serving nearly 400 youth. The Marsh also has a a developing work program including: The Monday Night Marsh for short developing work, Marsh Rising for full-length workshops and Marsh runs for full-length premieres. Additionally, The Marsh offers a year-round roster of developing work classes for adults. In 2018, The Marsh offered 16 classes serving 136 students.
