Mission

ACF develops and supports research that advances the prevention and treatment of cancer for people and pets. ACF focuses on furthering research in comparative oncology, which is the study of cancers that occur similarly in both companion animals and humans. To fund and develop research focused on the biologic similarity of cancer in pets and people that will expedite therapeutic and preventative benefits for both. Also, to inform the public and the scientific community about the biologic similarity of cancer in pets and people, and to communicate the ways in which comparative oncology will accelerate the treatment, prevention and ultimate eradication of cancer. The Canine Cancer Genome Project (CCGP) sponsored by Blue Buffalo Foundation and Animal Cancer Foundation seeks to map the seven most common canine cancer tumors and to place the datasets in the public domain for use by all cancer researchers.

About

The Canine Cancer Genome Project (CCGP) as described above received biospecimens donated by the CCOGC for the project. The scientific advisory council ("SAC"), composed of leaders in veterinary and human oncology, met and formulated request for Letters of Intent which was disseminated to a list they developed of the most qualified laboratories to conduct genetic sequencing. The CCGP scientific advisory council identified a multi-institutional research team and recommended that entity to the board of directors. The board of directors represented by pro-bono legal counsel at Eversheds Sutherland entered contract negotiations with the principal investigators. Due to the COVID19 crisis, the negotiation is tentatively to resume June 1, 2020.ACF has received $400,000 from the Blue Buffalo Foundation at the inception of the program. ACF is fundraising toward match goals. On December 20, 2018, Blue Buffalo entered a termination agreement with the Foundation, whereas Blue Buffalo wished to be released from its obligation with a payment of $540,000, this agreement totaling $940,000 in contributions under this agreement, so that Blue Buffalo may dissolve on December 31, 2018. While certain title provisions of the original agreement remain in effect, the Project is exclusive to the Foundation under the termination agreement.ACF Comparative Oncology Grant Award(s) are annual research grants of $50,000 for comparative oncology research that provides near-term benefit to pets with cancer while offering possibilities of translation to human cancer research and treatment. RFPs are opened in October of each year with proposals due in January of the following year. A scientific advisory council rates the proposals against the criteria in the RFP, the SAC meets via telephone conference to discuss the ratings and merits of competitively scored proposals, the SAC recommends a final award recipient to the board of directors, who approve the award. A grant agreement is made between ACF and the awarded institution and Primary Investigator prior to award being made.ACF Comparative Oncology Awareness Campaigns (various) provide information to the general public about the incidences of pet cancer, the similarities of human and canine cancer, the work being done in comparative oncology, and the need to develop science research in this area. Campaigns may be print, website, social media, informative. For the years ended June 30, 2019 and 2018, the Foundations fundraising expenses increased in order to raise funds and match the contributions of the Blue Buffalo Foundation, as per the condition in the grant contract (see Note 10). The funds raised will be used for program expenses related to the Canine Cancer Genome Project in future periods. Phase I of the Canine Cancer Genome Project agreement is in progress for the year ending June 30, 2020. It is expected that program expenses increase significantly in future periods.
