Mission
The mission of the Santa Barbara Foundation is to mobilize collective wisdom and philanthropic capital to build empathetic, inclusive and resilient communities. The Santa Barbara Foundation exists for one reason – to improve the lives of the residents and the vibrancy of the unique and diverse communities throughout Santa Barbara County. We do that by mobilizing our county's best resources – our people, our knowledge, and our desire for change and improvement. As a leader and partner, we gather people to address the communities' most pressing needs. Our goal is to harness the intellectual and philanthropic resources available and invest in solutions to the problems that challenge our community.
About
The Santa Barbara Foundation serves the entire county of Santa Barbara, funding a wide range of initiatives, projects and organizations. In 2018, the foundation awarded over 2,600 grants to nonprofit organizations. Grants are made through the foundation from various types of funds, including: donor advised funds, donor designated funds and field of interest funds. Discretionary grants, totaling over $4 million in 2018, are supported by the foundation's unrestricted endowment income and are awarded with the approval of the board of trustees based on recommendations of foundation staff following a rigorous process of research, due diligence, planning and evaluation.
