Mission
The Romero Institute is an interfaith, nonprofit law and public policy center. We expose structural injustice and litigate cases that matter to the wellbeing of the human family. Much of our work now focuses on climate change and the bad actors that carelessly harm the environment. We support solutions to climate degradation through public education, grassroots organizing, leadership development, research, investigation, litigation, and forward-thinking public policy. The Romero Institute's Lakota People's Law Project partners with the Lakota to promote cultural renewal and safeguard their rights to autonomy and self-determination. Greenpower is growing a community-based movement to transition from greenhouse gas-emitting fuels to locally produced and controlled renewable energy.

LPLP - PRIORITY IS THE MARSHALLING OF THE LEGAL DEFENSE OF CHASE IRON EYES, THE MOST TARGETED LEADER OF THE STANDING ROCK WATER PROTECTORS, FALSELY ACCUSED OF FELONY CHARGES THAT COULD HAVE IMPRISONED HIM FOR 6 YEARS AND NULLIFIED HIS LAW LICENSE. WE HAVE ASSEMBLED A TEAM OF TEN ATTORNEYS, INVESTIGATORS, RESEARCHERS, DIGITAL VIDEO EVIDENCE SPECIALISTS, AND ADVANCED INTERNS. THE GOAL IS TO WIN THE DEFENSE AND EXPOSE THE ILLEGALITIES, VIOLENCE, AND MALEVOLENT ACTIONS OF THE PIPELINE COMPANY AND THEIR MILITARIZED SECURITY COMPANY, TIGER SWAN, AN OFFSHOOT OF THE INFAMOUS BLACKWATER. UNIQUE AMONG THE 843 LEGAL CASES AT STANDING ROCK, OUR DEFENSE INCLUDES A FIVE PART "NECESSITY DEFENSE AND A TREATY DEFENSE AGAINST CRIMINAL TRESPASSING CHARGES. OUR WORK WILL BE AVAILABLE TO ALL OTHER ATTORNEYS WHO WANT TO USE IT IN THEIR CASES. A VIGOROUS COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM EDUCATED A 190,000 PERSON EMAIL NETWORK, A 270,000 PERSON SOCIAL MEDIA COMMUNITY, AND MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL MEDIA, ON THE DEVELOPMENTS OF THE CASE AND PROJECT. CHARGES WERE DROPPED AGAINST CHASE IN AUGUST, AND WE VIDEOTAPED ALL THE WITNESSES WHO WOULD HAVE TESTIFIED AT THE TRIAL, ADDING TO OUR ARCHIVED VIDEOTAPED DEPOSITIONS OF ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT. OUR TEAM LAUNCHED A DYNAMIC VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE TO COUNTER THE NORTH DAKOTA NATIVE VOTER REPRESSION LAW.
