Mission

Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy empowers individuals and their communities to engage in solutions to climate change. Our unique story stems from our founder Will Steger, who uses his compelling eyewitness account of the consequences of a warming world from over 50 years of polar exploration as a means to engage people in the issue and solutions. Established in 2006, Climate Generation is a nationally connected and trusted nonprofit that has been building climate literacy and action among educators, youth and the public with tangible results in terms of awareness, direct engagement and public policy wins. We provide educators, youth, policymakers, communities, and business leaders with the resources and opportunities to engage in solutions to climate change.

About

Education: Climate Generation is a recognized leader and sought-after partner in climate change education. We have been building a national network of climate literate teachers since 2006, which includes over 8,000 educators from around the country, with nearly 5,000 directly trained by us through our workshops and summer institutes for climate change education. Our 14th annual Summer Institute for Climate Change Education prepared educators to teach climate change through the humanities and was held in Washington D.C. in partnership with the Lowell School and NOAA Climate Office. Educators from 15 states were represented, reporting they will teach 6,120 students in the 2019-2020 school year. Our Teach Climate Scholarship Fund provided scholarships to 75% of attendees, as we strive to make our trainings more equitable and accessible to diverse educators. Post-surveys from institute attendees showed an increased confidence in teaching every measured category, from climate change science to the intersection of racism and environmental impacts. Community Engagement: Using the power of storytelling, our community engagement programming normalizes conversations on climate change through trainings, public conversations and community convenings. Our Talk Climate Institute empowered audiences to build confidence in speaking about climate change and provided tools to engage in climate conversations in their own communities. Held in partnership with the American Indian Community Housing Organization in Duluth, MN, over 40 people were trained, with 100% of attendees reporting confidence in their ability to explain, mobilize, and communicate about climate change. In measuring next steps, 96% of attendees planned to tell their climate story to a friend, colleague, or family member, and 56% plan to use it with policymakers. We were able to elevate our storytelling work on an even bigger scale, partnering with the Climate Reality Leadership Training in August to lead more than 1,200 people through a session on crafting their climate story as a tool for action. Youth Leadership and Policy Engagement: Youth leadership is uniquely important for building public will and putting pressure on policymakers to advance climate action. We played a central role in the Minnesota Can't Wait Coalition of 2018-2019, supporting youth leaders to meet with policymakers, raise their voices through testimony and media, and push boldly for change in collaboration with partners. Youth met with Governor Walz on the third day of his term, and within two months saw a response in the Governor's Pathway to 100% Clean Energy proposal, doubling clean energy targets of the previous year. In March, young leaders also advocated for climate solutions and bold action at the state capitol through our annual Youth Climate Justice Summit, where nearly 200 youth met with 50 legislators, participated in workshops to hone storytelling skills, discussed environmental justice, and built relationships to carry forward in their organizing. By the numbers: 8,514 people reached through programming and presentations, 1,243 downloads of our free online curriculum for educators, 484 donors supporting our mission and programs, 42 Minnesota high schools represented at the Youth Climate Justice Summit.
