Mission
East Side Learning Center's mission is 'Unlocking each child's potential through the foundation of reading' since 2001. We envision a community in which all children read with pride and joy to become life-long learners. To achieve this vision, children participate in one-on-one tutoring sessions with trained caring adult volunteers. Session plans are designed and individualized by staff teachers based on each child's unique needs, assessments, progress monitoring, and tutor, student, teacher, and parent feedback. Sessions focus on increasing literacy skills as well as the social emotional skills needed to succeed in school.

East Side Learning Center exists to help children acquire the foundational reading skills required to succeed in life and school. In 2019, 277 children participated in 23,693 tutoring sessions totaling 11,863 hours during and after school and over the summer. The 197 volunteer tutors delivered 51% of the tutoring. Of students who completed the program and were assessed twice: - 75% (136/182) grew at a catch up pace for reading. - 76% met their reading goals. - 78% were reading at grade level. ESLC piloted a pre-k literacy program aimed at preventing children from falling behind in reading. In the pilot, 100% (10/10) demonstrated growth such that they were school-ready. Of children served, 92% lived in poverty and more than 90% were non-white.
