Mission

Founded in 1965, the mission of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England (PPNNE) is to provide, promote and protect access to reproductive health and sexuality education so that all people can make voluntary choices about their reproductive and sexual health. PPNNE works to achieve its mission with a three-pronged approach which includes provision of reproductive health care services, sexuality education and professional training, and public policy work to protect and enhance reproductive rights.

About

PPNNE provides high-quality sexual and reproductive health care through 21 health centers across Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Patients receive vital services including: well-person exams, cancer screenings, birth control counseling and access to the full range of contraceptive methods, emergency contraception, abortion care, STD testing and treatment, HIV testing and counseling, immunizations, gender affirming hormone therapy, and other limited primary care. Highlights of our work meeting patient need in 2018 include:-Providing reproductive and sexual health care to 45,126 patients (through 67,651 medical visits), a 4% increase over the prior year and 15% increase since 2015.- Achieving important patient and societal outcomes. Based on formulas developed in peer-reviewed Guttmacher Institute research (www.guttmacher.org/broader-benefits/), we estimate that the work of our health centers prevented approximately 7,500 unintended pregnancies in 2018. By reducing unintended pregnancies, miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, and STDs, our work generated net government savings of $24.5 million. -Serving a predominantly low-income, underinsured, and young patient base. In 2018, 64% of our patients were low-income (at or below 200% of the federal poverty guideline, or $24,280 for one person), 38% were living below the poverty line ($12,140 for one person), 21% were uninsured/self-pay, and 32% had coverage through Medicaid or another public program. Our patient base was also overwhelmingly female (87%) and young, with 68% under the age of 30 (14% teens and 54% in their twenties).-Ensuring access for uninsured/underinsured patients by delivering over $8.3 million in free/discounted health care through our sliding fee scale program. -Providing services as patient need indicates such as: 89,854 STD tests, 12,936 pregnancy tests, 6,237 insertions of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC), 5,382 breast exams, and 4,406 Pap tests. -Enhancing and expanding care in multiple ways to better help patients with critical needs and improve their health and overall welfare. This includes: providing trauma-informed care; conducting enhanced psychosocial screenings and providing referrals for intimate partner violence, depression, and substance use (for patients who screen positive for having or being at-risk of developing a substance use disorder, we provide a brief intervention and referral to treatment); growing a centralized care coordination program to help ensure that patients - especially the most vulnerable - receive the care and help they need; piloting an integrated behavioral health model in which we embed mental health professionals in our health centers (this currently involves 6 VT sites and we are developing the capacity for expansion); and continually enhancing contraceptive care by, for example, training all health center staff to provide high-quality, evidence-based contraceptive counseling. -Achieving a very high level of patient satisfaction. Highlights of 2018 survey results include that: patients felt the services offered met their needs (scoring 95.8 out of 100 points), they were treated with compassion and respect (96.5/100), and our clinicians spoke using clear language (96.9/100). As a result, patients were extremely likely to recommend PPNNE to others (96.3/100).-Advancing special proactive initiatives (as funding allows) to improve public health and reduce unintended pregnancy - with critical downstream impacts on individuals, families, and communities. Examples of this work over the past year include training health and social service professionals and expanding partnerships to reach incarcerated women, people with substance use disorders, and other at-risk populations.
