Maine Equal Justice is a nonprofit legal aid and economic justice organization working to increase economic security, opportunity, and equity for people in Maine. MEJ accomplishes its mission through public policy advocacy, legal representation and impact litigation, and through statewide outreach, organizing, and education.

Litigation & other advocacy: Represents clients (individuals below 200% of the federal poverty level) before administrative agencies, the state legislature and state & federal courts primarily to ensure that they are able to meet basic needs, including food, housing, utilities, health care, and to move out of poverty. MEJ handled more than 644 individual cases in 2019, including administrative and legislative matters as well as direct client services. These included 244 health care (primarily Medicaid related) cases, 251 cases concerning food assistance and income support programs, 5 cases concerning employment issues, 67 cases concerning housing and utility matters, 18 cases concerning consumer issues, and 64 cases involving education or family issues.
