About

Chronos Cosmos: Deep Time, Open Space was held from May 5 to September 2, 2019. The exhibition was informed by Earth's place as one planet amid a vast universe. It presented artworks that considered space, time, and matter in relationship to celestial entities and earth-bound processes. The artists in the exhibition shared different notions of time, history, space, and site than the reigning system regulated by technocratic and colonial standards. Featured artists included Miya Ando, Beatriz Cortez, Radcliffe Bailey, Alicja Kwade, William Lamson, Eduardo Navarro, Heidi Neilson, MDR (Maria D. Rapicavoli), and Oscar Santillan. Folly/FunctionObjects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear was held on June 15, 2019. The winning proposal for the 2019 Folly/Function design-build competition for an entrance kiosk was Objects in Mirror Are Closer Than They Appear by School Studio. The 8-foot cube's mirrored faces allowed the structure to blend into the landscape while providing a surface for signage. Folly/Function is an annual juried competition jointly directed by the Architectural League of New York and Socrates. Rafael Domenech: Las Palabras Son Muros [Pavilion for Astoria] was held from July 13 to November 3, 2019. Scaffolding and construction mesh-provisional materials emblematic of the changing urban landscape-comprised the two semicircular towers of this outdoor piece. The mesh 'pages' hanging from the scaffolding featured graphically dynamic laser-cut texts that rotated throughout the exhibition. Domenech gleaned these texts from visitors to the park who submitted their words, phrases, and stories, which were then selected for presentation through a digital algorithm. In its totality, experimental digital graphic technique and chance composition aggregated into an amalgamation of voices throughout the 16-week exhibition. After the completion of the exhibition, the artist produced a book that combined the contributed texts and included reused elements of the weekly mesh installations. The Socrates Annual, 2019 was held from October 5, 2019 to March 8, 2020. For the 2019 exhibition, projects ranged from a soundscape conflating the sounds of animals and man-made objects to a monument to the invasive Ailanthus plant. Approaches varied among collaborative investigations of authorship and visibility, the recontextualization of domestic motifs, and the examination of biological material, among many others. 2019 artists included Jesus Benavente, Tecumseh Ceaser (Native Tec), Martina Onyemaechi Crouch-Anyarogbu (MOCA), Rachelle Dang, Chris Domenick, Hadi Fallahpisheh, Jes Fan, Hadrien Gerenton and Loup Sarion, Paul Kopkau, Alva Mooses, Marius Ritiu, Martin Roth, Gabriela Salazar, Lucia Thome, and Workers Art Coalition (WAC).
