Mission

TOUCH - Together Our Unity Can Heal, Inc. is a non-profit agency providing humane and holistic services to people living with chronic illness in Orange, Rockland, Sullivan and Ulster Counties, New York.

About

Food Recovery Program In 2010, TOUCH led the initiative to recover food from the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York (RFBNNY). This Program is known as Get Fresh as the RFBNNY distributes an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh food per month to TOUCH. This food is primarily fresh produce with a limited shelf life. TOUCH has structured this program to help support the nutritional needs of our chronic illness member population. However, this is a very large quantity of fresh food with a limited expiration date, and the quantity of food received is more than we can use before it spoils. TOUCH was the founding member of a community collaborative, Rockland Community Against Hunger (RCAH - rocklandhunger.org), that has established linkages with over forty other food pantries and feeding programs in Rockland County that can now provide fresh food to their clients. As a result, the Get Fresh Program provides a significant amount of food to other pantries. A notable outcome has been that other pantries have started to provide healthier food items in general to their clients as a greater understanding of nutrition and health outcomes develops in our community. In 2018, we expanded this program to a larger Food Recovery Program whereby we recover food from additional sources such as supermarkets, bakeries, farms and farmers markets. This has expanded the amount of food we recovered in 2018 to over 430,000 pounds. For 2018 and 2017 we received a total of 437,397 and 369,894 pounds of food, respectively. RFBNNY values this food at $1.73 per pound in 2018 and $1.70 in 2017. Therefore, the total IN-KIND Food for 2018 and 2017 has a value of $756,696 and $628,820, respectively. In 2018, of the 437,397 pounds of food received, TOUCH kept 38,702 pounds for a value of $68,239.USDA Food In-Kind - RFBNNY in 2018 and 2017 provided TOUCH with $54,403 and $37,196 worth of In-Kind food, respectively
