About

Medical education symposia: PRN has established a reputation for spotlighting the work of the most innovative and influential leaders in the fields of HIV and Hepatitis diagnosis, treatment and research. Covering 20 topics in 10 monthly live-meetings annually. In collaboration with the Medical Society of State of New York (MSSNY), PRN issued a total of 2185 HIV-focused CME credits in 2018: including 1038 credits to clinicians attending PRN's live-meetings, and 1147 CME credits issued to online students completing PRN's enduring CME programs. On December 6, 2016, Dr. James Braun, president of PRN, was the recipient of the Linda Laubenstein award for HIV clinical excellence, from the NYSDOH AIDS Institute 'in recognition of his leadership and unwavering commitment to providing clinical education that has profoundly expanded awareness of HIV medicine and policy among New York State care providers.' As Dr. Bruce Agins, medical director of the AIDS Institute of the New York State Department of Health stated in his introductory remarks for this award, 'I want to focus on what has been Jim's significant and outstanding contribution to clinical excellence in HIV care in New York. I think I would not be underestimating Jim's impact by saying that he has probably been responsible for educating more practitioners about HIV in New York than any other person. And that's not because of longevity. It is because of his tireless efforts through an organization he founded: PRN.' PRN is well-known for its programs featuring innovative and influential leaders in the fields of HIV treatment and prevention, the diagnosis and management of coinfections including viral Hepatitis, as well as other complications and comorbidities. PRN's monthly meetings are always well attended with 60-100 attendees each month. Since 2001 in collaboration with the New York County Medical Society and since 2010 with the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY), PRN has issued over 26,000 CME credits to our live-meeting attendees, including 1038 credits in 2018 alone. The topics, content, and educational aims of PRN meetings are based on expressed needs of PRN members, advances in technology and research pertinent to improved patient care, and objective measures of PRN audience knowledge and performance through the use of pre- and post-meeting audience evaluations. In addition to PRN's monthly live-events, PRN creates videos of its educational programs and publishes them online in the PRN notebook at the PRN website www.prn.org. PRN also gives these programs free-of-charge to the AIDS Institute of the New York State Department of Health for broadcast with CME on their continuing education initiative. In 2018, 1147 CME credits were awarded to PRN's online students. These online students were mostly physicians, nurse practitioners, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, registered nurses, and pharmacists, and the remainder came from a variety of backgrounds including case/ care managers, counselors, health educators, outreach workers, social workers, psychologists, medical/dental assistants, dentists, health program administrators/coordinators, health profession students/trainees, public health professions, pharmacy technicians, HIV test counselors, nutritionists, dietitians, dental hygienists, therapists and interventionists, indicating a wide professional need for educational programs produced by PRN. Furthermore, these online students represented 17 states.
