About
Afro Brazil Arts operates an internationally-known academy where youth and adults, ages three and up, learn to play mindful capoeira six days a week, year-round. Our center is located in the historic Clemente Soto Vlez Cultural & Educational Center in the Lower East Side of Manhattan (NYC). NYMCC is the headquarters of Capoeira Angola Quintal (CAQ), the Portuguese name for our group. CAQ has a nationwide presence, with academies in cities across the U.S., including Boston, San Francisco, Rochester (NY), Ithaca (NY), and Roanoke (VA). Our teachers travel throughout the world to participate and teach at capoeira festivals and performances. Programs at our academy, the New York Mindful Capoeira Center (NYMCC), include: classes for 94 child members ages 3-12, four days per week; classes for 15 teen members ages 13-18, two days per week; classes for 58 adult members ages 19+, six days per week; Teachers & Leaders program to develop, train and support all 28 CAQ teachers & group leaders nationwide; monthly sessions and annual seminar weekend. Programs for youth at NYC-area schools include: four year round after school residencies in NYC serving over 75 youth with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities; four short term in-school residencies in NYC serving over 770 youth; six performances, workshops & academy visits in NYC reaching over 2,300 youth and families. Programs for seniors include a performance for more than 20 senior citizens at a NYC-area senior center. Special events include: three special cultural and fitness events for children and families; three special cultural and fitness events for adults, including a weeklong festival featuring capoeira, music and dance.
