Mission

The mission of the American Foundation for the Blind is to create a world of no limits for people who are blind or visually impaired. We mobilize leaders, advance understanding, and champion impactful policies and practices using research and data.

About

Knowledge building and information dissemination: In FY2019, the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) continued transitioning programs to reflect its new strategic plan. Through research and data, we have unprecedented ways of looking at old problems and needing new solutions. Prioritizing a consumer-centered approach with scalable impact, AFB is pursuing and catalyzing forward-looking knowledge generation on key issues facing people who are blind or visually impaired by fostering collaborations with institutions of higher education and other research organizations, and by conducting limited independent research. Priority issue areas may include (but are not limited to) policy research and applied research in: education, meaningful employment and social/economic mobility, rehabilitation services, aging and vision loss, demographic trends, and technology. AFB's Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB), the international peer-reviewed journal of record in the blindness field, delivers current research and best practice information, and analysis and commentary from authoritative experts on critical topics. The two-part 2019 special edition, guest edited by an expert in the field of visual impairment, focused on employment and individuals with visual impairment. The AFB Leadership Conference is an annual event that seeks to improve the quality of programs and services to blind and visually impaired children and adults. In 2019, more than 400 attendees from over 40 states and four countries and territories joined us for three days of informative sessions and exhibitor booths, inspirational keynotes, and affirming award presentations.
