Mission

New York Live Arts is a center of diverse artists devoted to body-based investigation that transcends barriers between and within communities led by world-renowned artist Bill T. Jones. We are a place that brings people together to explore common values through live gathering and performance reminding us of our humanity and elevating the human spirit. We are an institution with an unequivocal commitment to supporting the creative identities of people living together in creative community. We provide much-needed resources to artists at every stage of their career, in a world where funding for the arts is increasingly reliant on the generosity of individuals. We enable the creation of work by artists at every level: from emerging talent being seen for the first time, to the mid-career artists who will be our next great masters. We foster artists who participate courageously in the world of ideas and ask difficult questions. We believe the artist plays a distinct role as a witness to truth, by participating in free speech and expression that often comes at personal risk. We believe that live art has the ability to create communities, confluences, and platforms for the exchange of ideas. We are living in a critical moment in which the social, political, and cultural tides are changing and these challenging times call on us to convene in a central place devoted to bringing people together in exploration of our common values. With all that is happening globally and within our borders, we believe even more in our vision to be a conduit for engagement through the arts. The repertoire we present and the conversations we host, work to address themes spanning personal and communal responsibility, racism, gender equality, and civil liberties. We are asking those who share our values to join us as we build the community of this important space for live gathering in the heart of New York City and to continue to elevate live performance – an act that has the power to remind us what humans are capable of.

About

New York Live Arts had a critically acclaimed 2018-19 season including one Bessie Award nomination among eighteen commissioned artists. Live Arts produced 9 main stage presentations including Live Feed and Live Ideas that brought in an audience of nearly 11,045 to Live Arts. The Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company toured nationally and internationally, bringing its work to approximately 17,000 audience members. During the company's 37th year, they had 28 performances in 9 states throughout the United States including California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, Washington D.C and Wyoming and 5 performances throughout Italy. New York Live Arts presented its fourth resident commissioned artist program, the world premier of Roseanne Spradlin's 'Y' came in from September 27th to 29th and October 4th to 6th 2018. Live Arts commissioned new work from some of the most forward-thinking independent artists of our time including Rhizomatiks and Elevenplay, Kaneza Schaal, Netta Yerushalmy, Bill Shannon, Dancenoise, Jennifer Nugent & Paul Matteson, Molly Lieber & Eleanor Smith, Kota Yamazaki, Derrick Adams and Roseanne Spradlin. Along with performance fees, each commissioned artist enjoyed a week-long technical residency in New York Live Arts' theater, an unusual opportunity to refine a work for the stage. Fresh Tracks, our signature program for emerging choreographers, offers younger, early-career artists opportunities to showcase their work under the mentorship of Live Arts. Fresh Tracks artists receive development support for a short work and are presented on our main stage in a sole evening dedicated to the five artists. The Live Feed residency program is a laboratory for the development of new commissioned work directed to our theater. Emerging and mid-career artists selected by the Live Arts curatorial staff are offered 140 hours of rehearsal time over two years, culminating in an informal public of a work-in-progress, followed by moderated discussions in the first year. In the second year, we premier their newly created performance piece in our theater. New York Live Arts served as an artistic home to more than 200 emerging and mid-career artists. New York Live Arts also continued its Live Ideas Festival, which is an annual humanities festival of the arts and ideas, exploring the ideas, controversies and thinking informing a different bodily-oriented theme each time out. Live Ideas is also intended to bring in new audiences; those who might not normally attend dance but would access programming rooted in other spheres of inquiry. The seventh Live Ideas Festival, 'Live Ideas-AI: Are You Brave Enough for the Brave New World?' is New York Live Arts annual humanities festival of arts and ideas. We are at the dawn of an exciting new world that will likely impact every aspect of our lives. The response, depending on who is speaking, ranges from unadulterated enthusiasm to existential fear. But what is AI? Some of us may immediately conjure up killer robots, or HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Or, something much closer to home. Think Alexa or your iPhone. Live Ideas 2019 will focus on artificial intelligence for the general public from the perspective of its societal, cultural and artistic implications. The festival will unfold through 5 days of discourse, performances, an exhibition, classes for kids and adults, a Hack-Art-Thon and more. We hope to move past the hype and fear around AI so that all of us-from the technophile to the technophobe and the tech-curious-can participate in the AI driven future in an informed, human-centered and meaningful way. Live Ideas 2019 allowed New York Live Arts to bring Japan-based company Rhizomatiks x Elevenplay x Kyle MacDonald to New York for the very first time with their collaborative work, Discrete Figures. We also hosted our first ever Hack-Art-Thon, focusing on AI and the stigma around mental health. We paired 8 groups of 2 together and over the course of 3 days, they created something together, which was presented in the final event of the festival and the winning team was awarded $5,000 to go towards bringing to life their creation. The winning team, Keira Heu-Ywyn Chang and Nia Laureano created an app called 'Mimi' to help those dealing with mental health issues get help through an online app. New York Live Arts' Live Core program is dedicated to provide artist with the tools, support and professional development they need to truly excel. The program draws on the resources of the institution to make it possible for artists to connect with larger audiences, raise funds to support their work, and augment the visibility of dance in New York. Enrollment with an affordable $100 for a full year of unlimited access to marketing services, inclusion in Live Arts' e-blasts and print programs, development and fundraising guidance, ticket discounts and access to masterclasses and workshops. New York Live Arts continued Shared Practice, a master-class program where Live Arts season artists receive a studio-based experience that creates an exchange between artists who would like to experience a process other than their own. Along with its robust touring schedule, Bill T Jones/Arnie Zane Company had numerous masterclasses, and workshops at organizations such as Riker's Island, New York University, and Loyola Marymount University. The company also licensed to MSU, UNC, Harvard Dance Center, Franklin and Marshall College, Yale University, Rutgers University, and the Juilliard School.
