Mission

Using direct representation and advocacy, we fight to keep children out of the justice system so that they can thrive in their homes and communities. We envision a Louisiana where every child, no matter their race or class, is free to be a kid and supported in becoming a healthy adult.

About

The Louisiana Center for Children's Rights flagship project is the Children's Defense Team, which serves as the juvenile public defender in New Orleans, providing an innovative model of holistic, team-based, cross-disciplinary advocacy that responds to the causes and consequences of arrest and incarceration, working towards both legal and life success for New Orleans' youth in more than 1,200 cases each year. Statewide, LCCR is a leader in promoting the right of every young person in Louisiana to high-quality legal representation and we provide training and technical assistance to Louisiana's community of juvenile public defenders. We advocate at a systems level for law and policy change to build a juvenile justice system that is fair, compassionate, and supportive of positive youth development. We are reinventing advocacy for young people in the juvenile justice system and building an exportable model of transformative, holistic representation.
