HOUSING AND PROGRAMS FOR SICK CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES

About

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York, Inc. (RMHC of CNY) creates, identifies and supports programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children in Central New York and Northern Pennsylvania. We demonstrate this by operating the 25-guest room Ronald McDonald House as a home for families whose children are hospitalized with serious illness or injuries. When parents learn that a child is seriously ill, everything changes. Daily routines are interrupted to travel to distant cities for medical care. Dinners come from hospital cafeterias or vending machines, and the comforts of home are traded for a chair near the bedside of a sick child. With the support of donors and volunteers, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central New York (RMHC of CNY) helps make life a little easier during these difficult times, allowing parents and families to focus on what really matters: the health and well-being of their child. The CNY Ronald McDonald House is a home. We provide guests with so much more than just a private room to stay in and home-cooked meals. The House offers comfort, support and resources to families, just minutes away from area hospitals in Syracuse, and an opportunity to talk with other guests who understand what it's like to face the unthinkable. After all, families are stronger when they are together, and by keeping them close, we can play a role in the healing and coping process. In November 2012, RMHC of CNY celebrated two significant milestones - The 30th Anniversary of the CNY Ronald McDonald House and the opening of the new, larger, fully handicap accessible House. Our larger, fully handicap accessible home better meets our current needs and can accommodate future growth. Our new House offers the same restful hospitality with key expansions which has enhanced the quality of care for the pediatric and prenatal populations while now offering services to high risk pregnant women. Our house amenities include 100% handicap accessibility, 25 guest rooms with private baths, a long term stay apartment, elevator, large family centered kitchen, family dining areas, community room, family resource room, wireless access and more. We have expanded our services and the guest we can accommodate. The features of our new House have allowed us to meet the diverse needs of new populations of guest families including: Women with high-risk pregnancies who travel to Syracuse for specialized prenatal care; Children receiving new outpatient treatments that require special hygiene and safety protocols; Caregivers of pediatric patients with handicap-accessible and medical needs who require an elevator and wheelchair-accessible bathrooms. When families with seriously ill children travel to Syracuse from counties throughout Upstate New York and Northern Pennsylvania to receive medical care at local hospitals and health care facilities, we are able to offer them the comforts of home and an atmosphere where they can share experiences with other families at a very reasonable cost. The children of these guest families were being treated at area hospitals for cancer or leukemia, heart disease, brain injuries, chronic health illnesses, respiratory problems, accidents, and complications from premature birth, to name a few. In 2018, we provided daily meals and safe, comfortable, affordable lodging for guest families. More than 2,500 family members stayed with us for a cumulative 4.040 nights; nearly 900 children including not only patients, but in many instances, their brothers and sisters were served. Additionally, 18 women whose pregnancies were classified as high-risk stayed with us and all together, their individual stays attributed to 200 nights at our House. The average length of stay is 5 nights per family. With more families to serve, we have also seen an increase in our annual operating costs - costs that we rely heavily on the community for to help us offset them. An average cost for a family of four for one night without the CNY Ronald McDonald House is approximately $275.00 per day. The cost per day for a family of four WITH the CNY Ronald McDonald House is $25.00. Over the course of a year, we saved our guest families over $1.2 million. Families who stay at the CNY Ronald McDonald House must live more than 15 miles from Syracuse. The majority of the families live 50-100 miles from Syracuse. In 2018, guests came from 30 New York State counties, several other states. The CNY Ronald McDonald House is centrally located just east of downtown Syracuse, near the three major hospitals it serves, Crouse Hospital, St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center, and Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital and their clinics. Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital provides general and specialty pediatric services to children and families from a 17-county region. It is the regions only Level I trauma and burn center and offers a complete range of health care services for children from birth to 19 years of age. Families travel long distances with their children for care at several nationally renowned treatment centers at the Hospital. These families stay at the CNY Ronald McDonald House. Approximately 70 percent of the annual guest night stays at the CNY Ronald McDonald House are parents whose infants are hospitalized in the regions only Level IV neonatal intensive care unit at Crouse Hospital due to premature births. RMHC of CNY also serves families whose newborns are receiving treatment at St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center Level III Intensive Care Nursery.
