Mission

Children's Literacy Initiative works with educators to transform instruction so that children can become powerful readers, writers and thinkers. CLI envisions a nation where every child has the power of literacy and the opportunity for a lifetime of success.

About

Children's Literacy Initiative focuses on ensuring students from educationally underserved communities can read and write on grade level by third-grade. CLI provides workshops, individual coaching and tens of thousands of children's books to over 3,600 teachers in 345 schools across the country. In addition to $24.1m in fee-for-service revenue, CLI relies on both philanthropic and federal funding, bringing total revenue to $33.7m. With only 4.7% of expenses going towards fundraising and 7.8% towards management and general expenses, CLI is able to direct 87.5% towards program services (see Part IX, Statement of Functional Expenses).
