About

STARBASE is a program of the Department of Defense, hosted by the Minnesota National Guard and supported by corporate and community organizations for the purpose of inspiring and educating youth in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). STARBASE Minnesotas 20-25 hour STEM programs are taught in the exciting and immersive, technological learning environments of the Minnesota Air National Guard bases the 133rd Airlift Wing in St. Paul and 148th Fighter Wing in Duluth. In FY2019, 3,623 Twin Cities students achieved the following results: 95% students increased their knowledge and skills in STEM with a 80% average pre to post-test improvement; 98% students reported that STARBASE made learning fun; 88% students reported increased interest in pursuing more STEM, and the majority reported interest in pursuing a STEM career. Of the teachers participating, 96% reported gains in STEM knowledge and teaching strategies; 99% rated STARBASE excellent (91%) or very good (8%); 100% want to return to STARBASE. An additional 1,674 students participated in STARBASE Minnesota-Duluths school-year and summer programs with the following results: 52% average pre to posttest improvement; 99% of the students reported STARBASE made learning fun. Of the teachers participating, 85% classroom teachers reported gains in STEM knowledge and teaching strategies; 96% rated STARBASE excellent; 4% very good; 100% want to return to STARBASE. A combined total of 758 military, corporate, and community members volunteered over 4,500 hours in STARBASE programs. A combined STARBASE total of 476 educators from 14 school districts participated over 6,560 hours in STARBASE programs; an additional 73 pre-service college students from five Twin Cities colleges and universities participated 556 hours in field experiences at STARBASE.
