The Northeast Community Center (NECC) serves the growth, development and education of its diverse neighborhood, providing residents with increased access to educational, cultural and social opportunities. Harmony Project KC, the flagship program of NECC, harnesses the transformative power of music to increase access to higher education for underserved students by removing systemic barriers to achievement through academic and social support.

HARMONY PROJECT KC (HPKC) A NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED, RESEARCH-BASED YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND MENTORING PROGRAM THAT USES INTENSE MUSIC EDUCATION AS A MEANS FOR POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT, SOCIAL INCLUSION AND COMMUNITY SAFETY IN LOW-INCOME COMMUNITIES. IN 2016, HPKC PROVIDED 140 UNDERSERVED YOUTH, AGES PRE-K TO COLLEGE WITH TUITION-FREE, YEAR-ROUND, AFTER-SCHOOL AND WEEKEND ORCHESTRAL MUSIC INSTRUCTION, PRACTICE, PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. HPKC PROVIDES LESSONS AND INSTRUMENTS AT NO CHARGE, AS LONG AS STUDENTS REMAIN IN SCHOOL. CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O. HPKC KEEPS YOUTH SAFE AND IN SCHOOL AND IMPROVES THEIR ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL OUTCOMES. IN 2016, 100% OF HPKC STUDENTS STAYED IN SCHOOL AS COMPARED TO A 40% HIGH SCHOOL DROPOUT RATE IN THE AREA. OF THE 90 STUDENTS ON CAMPUS, 65% INCREASED THEIR GRADE IN EITHER ENGLISH ARTS OR MATH BY ONE LETTER GRADE. ALL STUDENTS ADVANCED TO THE NEXT GRADE LEVEL FOR THE 2016/17 SCHOOL YEAR. IN 2016, HPKC ACHIEVED A LOW STUDENT ATTRITION RATE WITH ONLY 2 STUDENTS LEAVING THE SCHOOL DUE TO FAMILY RELOCATION/SCHEDULING CONFLICTS. HPKC FOLLOWS PARTICIPANTS THROUGH THEIR ENTIRE CHILDHOODS, AND THEN ASSISTS WITH COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS UPON GRADUATION. IN 2016, HPKC BEGAN ITS FIRST OUTREACH PROGRAM FOR 40, 3- TO 5-YEAR-OLDS AT WOODLAND EARLY LEARNING COMMUNITY SCHOOL, A KANSAS CITY, MO PUBLIC SCHOOL, HEAD START PROGRAM. ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDED PERFORMING WITH MEMBERS OF THE KC SYMPHONY AT A SUMMER CONCERT ON THE LAWN OF THE KC MUSEUM, PRESENTING AT THIRD THURSDAYS AT THE NELSON-ATKINS MUSEUM OF ART, PARTNERING WITH THE KC SYMPHONY FOR WORKSHOPS AND REHEARSALS, AND PARTNERING WITH KC YOUTH SYMPHONY FOR MENTORING AND FIELD TRIPS.
