INVESTIGATING: AMCHA Initiative released a groundbreaking report examining antisemitic activity in 2017, which found that Israel-related antisemitic incidents were considerably more likely to contribute to a hostile environment for Jewish students than incidents involving classic antisemitism. In addition, AMCHA Initiatives survey on Antisemitism on U.S. Campuses and Efforts to Address It was a featured mini-report in the Tel Aviv University Kantor Centers report on Antisemitism Worldwide 2018: General Analysis. DOCUMENTING: As the only publicly-accessible, user-friendly database of antisemitic activity on more than 400 campuses nationwide, AMCHAs website is an invaluable resource for university stakeholders, allied organizations, state and federal legislators and scholars. During this reporting period, AMCHA transitioned to a new website that included upgraded database designs, powerful search engines on nearly every page, as well as new searchable photo and video libraries, making it much easier for parents, students, alumni, researchers, journalists, legislators and public policy makers to access and analyze data about campus antisemitism. AMCHAs Antisemitism Incident Tracker documented over 600 incidents. The Forward commended AMCHAs Antisemitism Tracker in August 2018, stating that it provides by far the most thorough public documentation of campus-based anti-Semitism in all its permutations.EDUCATING: During this period, AMCHAs data, studies and efforts were cited in more than 400 articles in outlets that included The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Times, The Hill, Inside Higher Ed, The Chronicle of Higher Education, TIME Magazine, The Forward, Haaretz, Jewish Telegraph Agency, Jewish Journal and many more. AMCHAs data, studies and efforts regarding San Francisco State University also played a crucial role in the Lawfare Projects lawsuit on behalf of two SFSU students, that resulted in a successful settlement. In addition, AMCHAs director discussed the problem of campus antisemitism and AMCHAs efforts to combat it on dozens of radio shows and podcasts and has presented AMCHAs work at conferences in the U.S., Israel and Germany. During this reporting period, AMCHA sent out 20 bulletins to 10,000 supporters and issued 15 press releases to hundreds of media outlets. COMBATING: During this period, AMCHA coordinated and led a coalition of more than 135 religious, civil rights, education and advocacy organizations in urging university administrators to adequately respond to incidents of campus antisemitism on 12 campuses across the country, including New York University, University of Michigan, Pitzer College and the University of California. In addition, AMCHA led the coalition in writing to over 250 university presidents nationwide, alerting them to the threat that an academic boycott of Israel poses to students and faculty on U.S. campuses, and urging them to pledge to prevent attempts by faculty to implement an academic boycott on their campus.
