Mission

Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement™ is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with a mission to ensure that every child has access to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in their classrooms and to help facilitate this teaching within their families, schools and communities. We do this in honor of Jesse and to spread the message he left on his family’s kitchen chalkboard shortly before he died – “Nurturing, Healing Love.” Founder, Scarlett Lewis has personally dedicated her life’s work to sharing Jesse’s message to make a positive impact on our world and by supporting the efforts of increasing the awareness and benefits of SEL by “Choosing Love.”

About

MissionThe Mission of the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation is to ensure that every child has access to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in their classrooms and to help facilitate this teaching within their families, schools and communities. Significant Activities On December 14, 2012, Scarlett Lewis 6-year-old son, Jesse Lewis, was murdered, alongside 19 of his classmates and 6 educators at Sandy Hook Elementary school in one of the worst mass shootings in US history. Jesse was hailed as a hero that day. When the shooter stopped to reload, Jesse courageously stood in front of him and used his final moments to yell to his classmates to run to safety. When Scarlett returned home after his death, she found a message Jesse wrote on their kitchen chalkboard shortly before he died: Nurturing Healing Love. These words are not in the vernacular of a 6-year-old, but they are in the definition of compassion across all cultures. Giving and receiving love is a basic human need and connects all of humanity. Jesses words helped Scarlett realize her lifes mission to teach others how to choose love, for themselves and others. Jesses killer acted on an angry thought in his head. Scarlett believes that had he been given the social and emotional tools and skills to change his rage into a loving thought, the tragedy at Sandy Hook (and others like it) never would have happened. Inspired by Jesse's words and courage, Scarlett founded the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement (JLCLM) in 2013. Our mission is to ensure that every child has access to Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) in their classrooms and to help facilitate this teaching within their families, schools and communities. In order to achieve our mission, we developed The Choose Love Enrichment Program (CLEP), a free SEL-based program that teaches individuals to choose love for themselves and others, in any circonstance. CLEP is a Pre-K through 12th grade curriculum that contains the universal teachings of courage, gratitude, forgiveness, and compassion in action. CLEP helps kids acquire and apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy and compassion, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. In addition to SEL, CLEP was designed to include character values, the latest neuroscience, positive psychology, mindfulness and post traumatic growth research. CLEP teaches children Jesses formula for choosing love Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion in Action = Choosing Love. CLEP was designed and created for teachers by teachers, is easily adaptable and implemented, and is aligned with the state Common Core requirements and the American School Counselor Associations Mindsets and Behaviors Standards. Most importantly it is available online for FREE to all educators so that no student is denied this life-enhancing and even life-saving education.
