Film Forum began in 1970 as an alternative space for independent films, with 50 folding chairs, one 16mm projector and a $19,000 annual budget. Today, Film Forum is a 4-screen cinema, with up to 250,000 annual admissions, 469 seats, 55 employees (24 full-time), 6500 members and an annual operating budget of approximately $6 million. We present films that treat diverse social, political, historical and cultural realities. Programmers Karen Cooper, Mike Maggiore and Bruce Goldstein attend several film festivals worldwide to diversify our programming. Film Forum presents two programs: 1) New York City theatrical premieres of American and foreign independent films. 2) Repertory program that includes foreign and American classics, genre works, and retrospectives of master directors.

FILM EXHIBITION FILM FORUM CONTINUES IT WORK OF: PREMIERING AN INTERNATIONAL ARRAY OF NEW FILMS THAT TREAT DIVERSE SOCIAL, POLITICAL, HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL REALITIES; AND, PRESENTING THE BEST IN CLASSIC AND GENRE CINEMA FROM AROUND THE WORLD AND TAKING RISKS ON MOVIES BOTH OLD AND NEW. PROGRAMMING IS BASED ON A FILM'S INHERENT ARTISTIC QUALITY AS OPPOSED TO COMMERCIAL CINEMAS THAT MAKE DECISIONS BASED ON THE BROADEST BOX OFFICE APPEAL.DURING FY 2019, FILM FORUM COMPLETED A $4.7 MILLION CAPITAL PROJECT: RENOVATING ITS EXISTING THREE SCREENS AND CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW FOURTH SCREEN. THE THEATER WAS CLOSED FOR 1 MONTH AT THE BEGINNING OF FY 2019 TO ACCOMMODATE COMPLETION OF CONSTRUCTION PROJECT.
